US claims WikiLeaks founder's case not politically motivated Featured
By Sam Varghese
Lawyers for the US Government have claimed during a British High Court hearing that WikiLeaks publisher and founder Julian Assange put the lives of innocent people at risk by publishing unredacted information.
On Wednesday, the second day of the hearing in London, Claire Dobbin claimed Assange had leaked information about sources and supported theft and hacking. Assange was again too ill to attend the hearing in person.
Dobbin also claimed that the Australian, 52, was not being pursued for political reasons.
On Tuesday, Assange's lawyers had told the court that the case against him was political and thus did not fall within the ambit of the extradition treaty between the US and the UK.
In December 2023, the UK High Court announced it would hold a two-day public hearing on 20 and 21 February for the Australian's final appeal against being sent to the US.
This hearing is to decide whether Assange will be allowed to present his full case against extradition to the US. A verdict will be known after 5 March.
If the case goes against Assange, then he could be extradited to the US within days of the verdict being announced.
Dobbin told the court: "His [Assange's] prosecution is based upon the rule of law and evidence. The appellant’s prosecution might be unprecedented but what he did was unprecedented.”

NO date set for the judgement by the two judges. And in the meantime, Julian #Assange remains in prison and his health is so precarious that he wasn't able to attend the hearing neither in person nor via videolink pic.twitter.com/D0V9oxPUGr
On 10 December 2021, a two-bench High Court panel reversed a 4 January lower court verdict the same year to deny the US the right to extradite Assange to try him on criminal charges in Washington.
British District Judge Vanessa Baraister had ruled in January 2021 that Assange should not be extradited, saying the risk he would commit suicide in a US jail was too high.
