GME releases colour handheld UHF CB with GPS to keep Aussies safe and connected

By David M Williams

Australian communication technology company GME has launched a first-of-its-kind device, aimed at keeping Australians safe and connected, particularly in regional and remote areas with limited or no mobile phone service, the XRS-660 handheld UHF CB radio that includes GPS.

The GME XRS-660 is an Australian-made handheld UHF CB radio, that brings Bluetooth, a colour TFT screen, and, significantly, GPS functionality. This is a category first for such a device, and helps ensure true location awareness without needing to rely on a smartphone to provide location data.

While Australian capital cities may be well-catered for in the mobile phone coverage stakes, we live in a huge country and only a small fraction of that landmass has coverage. If you're an adventurer, a remote field worker, or even simply crossing our great nation to visit friends and family on the other coast, it's always important to pack the right tech to keep yourself safe.

As well as being a first with GPS included, it's also the first handheld UHF CB radio to feature a colour TFT LCD screen, which ensures you can see the display clearly in all environmental conditions, even full sunlight.

Bluetooth audio connectivity allows the handheld to wirelessly connect to an extensive range of third-party audio accessories. And, rugged IP67 Ingress protection and a MIL-STD810G durability rating make the XRS-660 the toughest and most advanced handheld UHF CB radio yet.

GME safety expert Tony Crooke says, “For Aussies travelling or working in remote and regional areas, staying in touch is vital to ensuring they get home safe. That’s why GME is proud to launch the XRS-660 – the first-ever XRS handheld radio with GPS tracking capabilities."

"Building on the market-leading innovation of GME’s popular range of XRS Connect UHF CB radios, Australians can now have total peace of mind knowing they can communicate with their fellow travellers or workers all while their live location is visible, without mobile phone service.”

The XRS-660 has a Li-On 2550 mAh battery that provides between 20 hours and 64 hours of continuous operation. Factors affecting battery life are Bluetooth, GPS, radio power, and wattage. With low power saving, GPS and Bluetooth both switched on, and using 5W power you can expect 20 hours of life. By switching Bluetooth off and tweaking other factors, you can extend this up to 64 hours, or more than two and a half days.

The XRS-660 Handheld UHF CB Radio from GME has a recommended retail price of $549 and you can find a dealer here.
