Printed Energy, eSAT Global partner on ‘smart label’ parcel tracking solution Featured
By Gordon Peters
Australian-owned Printed Energy has partnered with direct-to-satellite connectivity company eSAT Global on a deal to develop SMART LABEL parcel tracking solutions.
The smart labels will be powered by printed batteries produced by Printed Energy, a wholly-owned subsidiary of St Baker Energy Innovation Fund (StBEIF) which will lead the partnership.
Printed Energy Chairman Trevor St Baker AO said the main challenge to the much-anticipated adoption of wafer-thin smart labels was the lack of battery technologies that could be produced reliably and cost-effectively at scale.
“By combining the know-how of Printed Energy’s environmentally friendly, printed battery technology and eSAT Global’s proprietary GEO satellite technology and cellular networks, we believe we can overcome current barriers to widespread adoption and bring this product into circulation by 2025,” St Baker said.
“By enabling businesses to track and optimise their supply chains, we can help to reduce waste and minimise environmental impact.”
eSAT Global President and CEO Rick Somerton said the new smart label opened a world of possibilities for enhanced security, reduced waste, and optimised supply chains in a variety of industries including pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and cold chain.
“This partnership is a game changer for the logistics industry,’’ Somerton said.
“We’re creating smart labels that can track valuable packages virtually anywhere on Earth, even in remote locations beyond cellular reach.”
Printed Energy and eSAT Global note that they executed a Memorandum of Understanding to develop smart labels in 2024 and have started sharing marketing intelligence and working together to develop market opportunities.
Printed Energy produces fully-printed Zinc Ion Batteries that are thin, flexible, non-toxic and can be shaped and scaled for a variety of applications such as smart tags and labels, wearables, medical devices, skin patches and tags for timed sporting events.
From its cutting-edge facility in Arizona, Printed Energy mass manufactures products that integrate electronics and printed batteries onto the same surface without requiring wires.
Printed Energy CEO George Linscott said the flexible, low-cost printed batteries were the perfect fit for powering smart labels and a perfect complement to eSAT’s satellite technology.
“They’re lightweight, durable, and environmentally friendly, providing long-lasting power without the harmful drawbacks of traditional batteries,” Linscott said.
“This partnership allows us to scale our technology and make a significant impact on the future of global logistics,’’ he said. The companies say that the eSAT-Printed Energy smart labels will offer several unique advantages:
