Synology: Virtual Machine Manager – Install & Setup
Synology Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) is a virtualization platform that allows to create, run and manage multiple virtual machines on a Synology NAS.
It combines computing, storage and networking resources on a single hardware platform and allows to build a cost-effective and easily managed virtualization environment.
This post explains how to install VMM on the Synology NAS and perform the initial setup.
Synology Virtual Machine Manager (VMM)
First of all, before installing VMM, ensure that your Synology NAS is among the supported models and it meets the requirements.
Please note that the Virtual Machine Manager package is only available for Synology NAS devices from the lineup or better. If you cannot find the app in the Package Center, it may indicate that your NAS is not compatible.
Install VMM
To install VMM, simply search for “Virtual Machine Manager” in the Package Center and click on Install:
Agree for dependencies installation:
Configure VMM
After installing VMM, you can launch it from the Main Menu:
When you first launch VMM, the Virtual Machine Manager Setup Wizard will start:
Click Next on Check Host Settings:
Click Yes:
Select a volume for the storage:
Congratulations! The initial Virtual Machine Manager setup is now completed!
The next step is to create a virtual machine.
Once you are in the VMM console, in the left pane click on Virtual Machine → Create and follow the further instructions.
