Australian smartphone shipments down in 3Q for fourth straight quarter Featured

Australian smartphone shipments in the third quarter of 2023 fell by 9.3% year-on-year, the technology analyst firm IDC says, adding that the 1.81 million units shipped marked a fourth consecutive quarter of declines.
In a statement, IDC said the sales at the end of the financial year brought about a slight lift in July, but consumer demand was muted due to economic conditions.
Figures showed that the average selling price of devices increased by 5.1% year-on-year during the quarter, reaching US$813 (A$1238.20).
IDC also found that sales of smartphones priced above US$1000 grew, driven by the recently released Samsung Galaxy Z5 and the Apple iPhone 15 series. New Oppo and Lenovo low- to mid-priced models sold well in open channels and the pre-paid market.
Yash Gupta, lead analyst for Mobile Phone Research at IDC Australia said, "Economic uncertainty is making consumers more cautious with their spending, resulting in restrained demand.
"Ongoing increases in interest rates, coupled with recent cost-of-living pressures, are expected to further dampen consumer demand in the domestic market."
Looking ahead, IDC said: "End-of-year events, such as Black Friday and Boxing Day sales, are expected to enhance sales for vendors and channels through enticing deals and consumer offers.
"Nevertheless, consumer demand will stay subdued for the remainder of 2023 and the first half of 2024, given the sluggish economic activities. This will result in a single-digit YoY decline in shipment numbers for 4Q23."
