'60s Supermodel Twiggy Recreates a Classic Photo - 56 Years Later

In fashion, the past is never far behind. History is continually revisited and reexamined; trends repeat; styles come and go and come again. And yet, some moments have the power to transcend time, referencing history in fresh new ways to chart a different path.

Of course, those moments often introduce us to new faces who, with their authentic spirit and singular styles, embody a zeitgeist all their own. Amongst them: Twiggy, the groundbreaking supermodel of the 1960s, whose gamine looks led a revolutionary cultural shift; Rita Ora, the singer-songwriter whose soulful sound and edgy aesthetic have been making waves since she first hit the scene in 2012; and Wisdom Kaye, the rising social media sensation whose modern approach to vintage style is influencing a new generation’s look. Though born to different times, each trailblazer brings a sense of authenticity to everything they do, looking to the past to offer a unique view.

Recently, each brought that realness to the pages of Vogue, wherein, ahead of their appearances at Vogue World 2023, in London, they reimagined some of the magazine’s most iconic moments using eBay’s timeless accessories. The idea was to bring the past and present full circle—not only because buying circular can help us express our personal styles more genuinely, but also because it is expected to bring a range of environmental benefits. To emphasize both of those points, each luxury accessory shown here is backed by eBay Authenticity Guarantee, a service in which eBay’s team of industry experts carefully examine eligible watches, fine jewelry, handbags, streetwear, and sneakers to ensure they’re exactly what they claim to be. eBay Authenticity Guarantee makes it all the easier to procure both vintage and new finds by clearly marking each eligible item with a blue checkmark on its listing page. Once purchased, the item goes through a meticulous authentication process and receives an authentication card with detailed information about the item.

It’s a service that feels especially meaningful as we all continue to desire more transparency, sustainability, and authenticity in everything we do. It’s all about being open, which is something eBay has always been committed to—and why Twiggy, Ora, and Kaye are such a perfect fit. Below, the three stars share their thoughts on all of the above and offer more insight on the archival images as well as each luxury accessory they wore—all of which are available via auction on eBay until 8 a.m. PT on September 24. Proceeds from the auction will go to Canopy Planet Foundation, the non-profit transforming unsustainable linear supply chains to protect the world's forests, species, and climate.

Twiggy

“Going back in time to recreate the shot that I did in 1967— just mind-blowing,” Twiggy says. It’s been more than 50 years since she first modeled the Louis Vuitton Papillon bag—as well as accessories similar to the Vacheron Constantin watch and Tiffany & Co. chain bracelet shown here—for the original Bert Stern image and yet “I actually remember the shoot quite well,” she says. “It’s wonderful to be recreating it.”

And probably a little surreal, too. Despite gracing 13 Vogue covers and appearing in countless spreads over the course of her meteoric career, the model still marvels at her place in the annals of fashion history. “It kind of makes me laugh when people call me an icon,” she explains. “I suppose I became the female face of that era. It's very flattering.” She’s not just being humble, either; the unpretentious charm that made her a worldwide star in the ‘60s is very much still apparent today.

“There was a carefree quality to the time; it was about having fun,” explains Vogue’s head archivist Ivan Shaw, who helped unearth the memorable vintage images seen here. “Twiggy really personifies it more than anybody.” The freewheeling spirit still resonates: Twiggy says that much of her recent fan mail has come from Gen Z-ers who’ve become enamored with that decade’s look and vibe: “Fashion is circular; it’s lovely how young people are collecting things from the sixties,” she says, underscoring the importance of ensuring a vintage item’s authenticity by purchasing pieces backed by eBay Authenticity Guarantee. “If you are buying vintage, you want it to be the real McCoy.”

Behind the Moment with Rita Ora

Being the real McCoy is something that’s important to musician Rita Ora, too—whether in the recording studio, on the set of a photo shoot, or in her day-to-day life. “I always try to look within when it comes to my music or anything I do,” she says. “It has to stem from truth.” The singer, who is also known for her adventurous style, relies on her intuition when it comes to choosing her looks. “It’s about feeling really confident and comfortable in my skin,” she explains. “I love the element of surprise, playing with textures, just taking a couple risks.” It’s one of the reasons she often wears vintage: “You can really pick and choose the things that make sense for you and your personality.”

To that end, the musician, who recreated Paulina Porizkova’s 1989* Vogue photo by Arthur Elgort, was especially excited to wear the Tiffany & Co., Chopard, and Van Cleef & Arpels bracelets that are featured in the shoot. “I love paying homage to the history of fashion,” Ora says, and, having the chance to channel her own history into the reimagining of an iconic shoot. “When I looked at this photograph, I felt like she looked a little bit vulnerable—that was my narrative in my head when I was recreating it. When you can capture that sort of emotion, it’s incredible.”

Wisdom Kaye

Behind the Moment with Wisdom Kaye

For Wisdom Kaye, capturing the essence of his archival moment, a 1986 photo of Christy Turlington Burns by Wayne Maser, was top of mind as well. “I felt like she was staring into my soul trying to judge my aura,” the TikTok fashion star explains. “It's such a powerful, strong image; I really wanted to make sure I was able to convey it.” Luckily, having access to similar items—a Cartier Pasha watch, small hoop earrings from Chopard (top earrings), and Van Cleef & Arpels bracelet, each backed by eBay Authenticity Guarantee—made it all the easier. “Knowing that the pieces I was wearing were authentic really helped me channel the energy.”

Authenticity is a cornerstone for Kaye—especially when it comes to creating influential content and expressing his singular sense of style. “It’s about wearing what feels like me, what represents me the best—not what other people are doing,” he explains. As a kid, he moved around a lot, and fashion was his way to fit in—and, eventually, his way to go against the grain. “As time went on, the individualism really started to show and I just wanted to wear what felt different. The urge to stand out is what pushed me to discover different avenues of fashion.” These days, he finds inspiration in everything from TV to social media to advertising, then mines trusted sources to help bring his vision to life. “I do a lot of secondhand shopping and eBay is one of the places I go to get archival stuff,” he says. “There’s such an illustrious catalog on eBay—it’s a really good place for me to find those things. I focus on getting very special pieces, things that have a high caliber of craftsmanship.”

Much like Twiggy and Ora, Kaye knows that keeping it real is key—whether paying homage to an archival fashion moment with authentic vintage items, or mining the past for ideas that will ultimately result in something new. It’s all about being true to yourself. As Kaye puts it: “When you know that what you're wearing is the real deal, you feel more in tune.”
