Geely-owned luxury sports car brand Lotus to launch electric GT model at an event in New York
September 8, 2023 2:05 pm
Lotus, a British luxury sports car brand that became majority-owned by Chinese automaker Geely in 2017, unveiled a fully-electric grand tourer (GT) sports car in New York on Thursday.
This marks the latest development in the British-based carmaker's strategy to transition from a niche and renowned brand to a high-volume manufacturer, with the aim of achieving sales of 150,000 cars annually by 2028.
The GT sports car is called the Emeya, it will start production in 2024 at a factory in Wuhan.
Lotus has disclosed that the top-specification model of the Emeya will boast a potent dual-motor configuration capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) in less than 2.8 seconds and achieving a maximum speed of 250 km/h (155 mph).
The vehicle is powered by a 102-kWh battery pack, which is integrated into an 800V Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) platform. It's worth noting that this platform is the same as the one used in the Eletre, although it differs from the lightweight LEVA platform that is expected to underpin upcoming Lotus models.
Lotus, which is in the process of a Nasdaq listing once it completed its merger with special acquisition company Catterton Asia Acquisition Corporation, launched its first high-performance electric SUV, the Eletre, in the fourth quarter of 2022.
Founded in 1948, the UK-based automaker announced a full transition into electric vehicles and shared a roadmap that introduces a new model each year through 2026.
In the first quarter of 2023, Zhejiang Geely Holdings Group announced that Lotus Technology, a division of its majority owned sportscar manufacturer Group Lotus, planned to introduce three new high-performance electric vehicle (EV) models over the next four years.
