AT&T launches 5G expansion for home internet in the US

American internet telco provider AT&T announced the expansion of 5G for home internet, offering the service to 16 markets in the US for US$55 per month.

Named Internet Air, it covers the areas of "of Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Harrisburg-Lancaster-Lebanon, Pennsylvania; Pittsburgh, Las Vegas, Phoenix (Prescott), Chicago, Detroit, Flint-Saginaw-Bay City, Michigan; Hartford-New Haven, Connecticut; Minneapolis-St. Paul, Portland, Oregon; Salt Lake City, Seattle-Tacoma and Tampa-St. Petersburg (Sarasota), Florida."

AT&T president broadband and connectivity initiatives Erin Scarborough said the company was identifying pain points and created a solution by using available network capacity in areas that are less densely populated while still providing a strong internet connection.

This is how Internet Air came into fruition, she said.

"We’ve already rolled out AT&T Internet Air to existing copper-based customers with great success. As we begin to scale, we are hyper-focused on selecting locations with enough wireless coverage and capacity to deliver not only a great in-home experience, but also maintain a top-notch wireless service for our existing mobile users."

Those who have AT&T wireless service and sign up for automatic payments can lower their bill to US$35 per month. The 5G home internet does not have overage fees, equipment charges or annual contracts. The contract won't also see an increase at 12 months.

Users will receive a box containing a modem/Wi-Fi router device together with a QR code to access a step-by-step guide providing instructions.

The carrier's Smart Home Manager app can assist users where to find the best spot at home to provide the strongest connection.

AT&T is also offering an option to add Wi-Fi extenders to create a whole-home mesh Wi-Fi to eliminate dead zones.

CNET reported that the telco provider was experimenting Internet Air in some parts of Los Angeles and Philadelphia, pitching the product in some locations as an upgrade to its older, DSL home broadband service, in areas where fibre-based internet is not available.

AT&T told CNET that it is expecting the download speeds to be between 40Mbps and 140Mbps, and upload speeds between 5Mbps and 25Mbps.

AT&T's 5G expansion comes after the carrier confirmed it was giving its 5G network an earlier-than-expected speed boost.
