Go to Magisk app and on the dash board beside the gear icon you see an anticlockwise icon like refresh symbol click on it,you'll find options select reboot to recovery and you'll enter recovery ,you need a mouse thpugh to navigate in twrp.

Thanks, I think I understand now! Having used adb on the PC to transfer the files to the stick, I take the stick to my TV, open the twrp app and proceed as advised?

You can use apps2fire app on your mobile,open connect to stick by entering the ip address in the app and click setup ,may require authorization that popsup on TV ,juck click always and ok and your good to go.
You can transfer the files from your mobile internal storage to Download folder of the stick ,you can even install apps of your mobile or apks from mobile which gets uploaded and installed.
Then you boot into twrp using Magisk app or Quickboot app and flash the necessary, saves journey between PC and TV........

Do use it on my oreo based rom,a great life saver.
Connect a usb hub to the USB-OTG ,to which in turn connects usb storage or mouse or keyboard.The power goes to the other end connector of the USB-OTG .
To boot to twrp as mentions you can use the Magisk app or the Quick boot apk a handler with different reboot options.
When in twrp you can connect the usb mouse and navigate various options.

All good up to preventing updates. 5.2.3.7 and Magisk installed. Trying to change the update files to .apkk and no go. Get error message 1, failed to change name. Any thoughts please?

Which file manager are you using?
Try doing it using twrp as explained earlier.
Mount system.......etc
Total commander app too does the needful.
You need root,go to configuration and click root.
Let me know if need be.

Hi, thanks, I'm using twrp. May have been finger trouble, I'll have another go shortly. If there's a delay before changing the update APKs will the stick try to update immediately or does Amazon only push updates at certain times?

Usless you click on install update and initialize will never,safety is the best measure than to load the stick with added bloatware.
Enjoy the little monster.
You can customize the launcher to Wolf Launcher or any ,if you ain't like the stock one.
And do so much to make the best of the beast.
Just be assured of what your doing.
All in the Launcher manager thread by sween.

OK. Hi. 5.2.7.3 rom installed. Magisk installed.

I tried to block the updates "com.amazon.device.software.ota" and "com.amazon.device.software.ota.override".

I have definitely changed "DeviceSoftwareOTA.apk" to "DeviceSoftwareOTA.apkk".

I can't find "DeviceSoftwareOta override"

I (perhaps mistakenly) have changed "DeviceSoftwareOtaldle.apk" to "DeviceSoftwareOtaldle.apkk"

It seems to me that I've renamed the wrong apks?

Hello!
Never disclose your ip address.
Connect stick to pc
Run
adb devices
It will say G.......... connected
Then adb reboot recovery
then adb shell
~#twrp install ..........rom and Magisk
If it ain't works
Try boot into twrp using the pc and boot into twrp using the exploit and reflash the rom and magisk if possible.
Once done run reboot and disconnect device and message me.
Let me know if successful........

Sorry, it doesn't like the command "adb reboot recovery" it responds with "C:\Users\timba>adb reboot recovery
error: device unauthorized.
This adbd's $ADB_VENDOR_KEYS is not set; try 'adb kill-server' if that seems wrong.
Otherwise check for a confirmation dialog on your device.

I'm assuming it's because the stick is not authorised?

Yes ,that's true.
You need to use the exploit to boot to recovery and try flashing the rom again.
