Dyson Zone noise cancelling headphones now available in Australia

By David M Williams

Household appliance maker Dyson has now launched its Dyson Zone noise-cancelling headphones in Australia. The headphones offer up to 50 hours of listening with ultra-low distortion, advanced active noise cancellation, and faithful audio reproduction across the entire sound spectrum.

The headphones were first announced in December and are Dyson's first-ever headset, but are the product of extensive research and development. Dyson earlier announced half a billion British pounds of investment in research.

The headphones were first released in China in January, then in other regions, before making their way to Australia. The headsets are feature-rich, with 11 microphones - eight of which are used to reduce noise pollution by up to 38dB, and monitor surrounding sounds 384,000 times per second. They charge to 100% in three hours via USB-C.

The science underpinning the headphones includes sound reproduction measures such as left-right balance, total harmonic distortion and frequency response to ensure excellent sound quality. In order to validate the specification objectives, Dyson's scientists relied on the results of extensive user testing.

The headphones faithfully reproduce frequencies ranging from 6Hz to 21kHz to ensure that every note or word is audible. Such a wide frequency range is due to the engineering of the electroacoustic system and components: the 40 mm and 16-ohm neodymium speakers are at the centre of the audio system. The loudspeaker and electronics, mechanical system, materials and acoustics have been
carefully designed to minimise distortion. The loudspeaker output is then equalised by intelligent signal processing 48,000 times per second which, when combined with noise reduction, neutralises harmonic distortion to levels inaudible over the entire frequency range (0.08% at 94 dB at 1 kHz).

The headphones have also been designed to be comfortable and durable, with weight distributed over the entire headphone instead of only the top of the head.

However, the story doesn't end there; along with being great-sounding headphones, they also provide a personal air filtration system. When designing the Dyson Zone, Dyson sought to tackle the dual problems of noise pollution and air pollution. More than half of the world's population lives in cities, and the figure is expected to rise to 70% by 2050. This urban growth is accompanied by an increase in associated infrastructure, all of which have an impact on the environment in which we live, generating noise and polluting the air.

To tackle this, the headphones include a visor that delivers air filtration based on Dyson's extensive expertise in vacuums, dryers, and other air-related products.

The headphones are available now in two models, the Dyson Zone Absolute+ limited edition headphones in Prussian blue / bright copper for $1,099 and the Dyson Zone limited edition headphones in Prussian blue / dark blue for $999.
