Tencent acquires majority stake in Polish game developer Techland

Polish developer Techland announced on July 24 that Chinese gaming and social media giant Tencent has acquired a majority stake in it.

Founded in 1991, Techland is known for its zombie survival games, including the Dying Light and Dead Island series. 

"Teaming up with Tencent will allow us to move full speed ahead with the execution of the vision for our games. We have chosen an ally who has already partnered with some of the world's finest video game companies and helped them reach new heights while respecting their ways of doing things," Techland CEO Pawel Marchewka wrote in a recent blog post.

Tencent is the world's largest gaming company, with a market capitalization of over $400 billion. The company has been aggressively acquiring studios in recent years, including Riot Games (League of Legends), Epic Games (Fortnite), and Turtle Rock Studios (Back 4 Blood).

The acquisition of Techland is the latest in a wave of consolidation in the gaming industry.

Sony has been acquiring smaller studios for years, with its biggest move being the purchase of Bungie, the developer of the hit game Destiny, in 2021.

Microsoft has also been on an acquisition spree in recent years, the biggest of which is the acquisition of Activision Blizzard for $75 billion in 2022. The acquisition gave Microsoft control of some of the biggest game franchises in the world, including Call of Duty, World of Warcraft and Candy Crush.
