CBS Story On OceanGate’s Missing Titanic Sub Goes Viral After Reporter David Pogue Got Jitters Over Its “Jerry-Rigged” Design

A six-month-old CBS report on OceanGate’s Titanic tourism submarine is going viral on social media after reporter David Pogue raised safety concerns about the now-missing vessel.

Pogue visited OceanGate’s operations last year and was submerged in the $1M submarine, named Titan, which vanished off the coast of Canada on Sunday. It was carrying a pilot and four passengers, including OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush.

Before boarding the sub, Pogue was given a tour of the vessel, during which he commented on its “improvised design.” This included lighting from Camping World and an unofficial PlayStation controller used to drive the submarine.

“It seems like this submersible has some elements of MacGyvery jerry-rigged-ness. You are putting construction pipes as ballast,” Pogue said to Rush in an interview.

“I don’t know if I would use that description,” Rush replied. He added that the OceanGate worked with Boeing and Nasa on the pressure vessel. “Everything else can fail. Your thrusters can go, your lights can go, you’re still going to be safe.”

Pogue said he was nervous before boarding and revealed some of the contents of the waiver form he was required to sign. This described the submarine as an “experimental submersible vessel that has not been approved or certified by any regulatory body and could result in physical injury, disability, emotional trauma or death.”

A clip of Pogue reading the waiver has been viewed 9M times on Twitter.

On a test dive with Pogue inside, the submersible platform that lowers Titan into the water failed when its floats came loose. A later dive, with CBS cameras still following Titan, the submarine lost contact with its launch ship. “We were lost for two-and-a-half hours,” said a passenger, who paid $250,000 for a ticket. A third dive was successful and the submarine found the Titanic shipwreck.

Because there were no humans in the drone. It’s not about the “corporate toy” but about human lives. The same reason why public money is spent on searching for people that get lost in the woods

  • JL Brown jr on June 22, 2023 12:21 pm

I’m sorry. But I am just a bit nervous in tight spaces. No im claustrophobic. I think you have a death wish if your not in at least a true deep water submersible

  • michael McAdams on June 22, 2023 10:36 am

People die climbing Everest every year. Some are alive when abandoned because those with them don’t have the stamina left after the exertion required to reach certain altitudes. Unless they perish at a base camp, which happens, the bodies are seldom recovered for the same reason. So you go 13,000 feet down instead of up. Once the oxygen depletes there is no need for further search and recovery. No country ever spent millions to rescue someone from Everest. Sad as it is, this is an equivalent situation. Public tax dollars should not be expended on a “corporate” rescue in international waters. If the US didn’t think a drone downed in the Black Sea was worth retrieving, why pick up pieces of a billionaires’ toy from the bottom of the sea.

    • M on June 22, 2023 11:51 am

The military considers items thrown in the ocean as DE-MILITARIZED.

  • Bella Tee on June 22, 2023 9:03 am

First, what I hope for most is that the five people aboard are rescued, but right now, Thursday morning EST, that looks less and less likely. I hope, if no rescue happens, that hypothermia caused them to go to sleep and die and they weren’t awake when their oxygen ran out. I hope the rescue teams stay safe. They needed something that would emit a specific series of pings as some airlines have on planes’ black boxes. But, they didn’t. As for tax dollars, it’s the job of the Coast Guard to conduct search and rescue missions, even if they don’t agree with the reason the rescue is necessary. There’s no connection between this tragedy and the tragedy of the homeless and hungry. If people want to help them, donate to food pantries, etc., or better yet, lobby to close the tax loopholes for the rich. The $250,000 these people paid was theirs to do with what they wanted, even if they wanted to sit and actually burn $10,000 bills. I’ve been hoping since Sunday that they’ll be found and rescued. I don’t care who they are or what the economics involved are, we’re talking about human lives. I’ve just heard that a debris field has been found near the Titanic, but no one knows if it’s the OceanGate submersible or not. I hope for a miracle, but I don’t believe it’s going to happen this time. I hope I’m proven wrong.

Thank you, that was very kind what you said.man we could sure use more of that type of thing.

      Morse code works.
      Thanks for the information.

    • Pam on June 22, 2023 10:50 am

This is the best comment I’ve seen anywhere. Thank you for your humanitarianism. And I’ve thought the same thing – if the rich were paying their share of taxes, then there would be no reason for anyone to mention the cost of the rescuer efforts.

    • Anonymous on June 22, 2023 10:43 am

Except this is in International waters, not US. Which is how they got around being certified. They came from Canada to get around regulations.

  • Believer on June 22, 2023 8:34 am

Why on earth would someone allow their child to go with them on a questionable expedition with a real possibility that they could die? This is baffling to me and I pray that God please get them out of there. This is unimaginable and completely avoidable

  • delphine herbert on June 22, 2023 8:30 am

How many ships are in the Mediterranean trying to rescue the hundreds of African migrants fleeing war and/or starvation, often refused entry by the more “civilized” nations who deliberately let them drown? But let a couple of foolhardy billionaires die, not without a worldwide effort. Trumpism rules.

  • John Boatswain mate on June 22, 2023 2:09 am

As a former member of the United States Coast Guard I can tell you first hand how extremely impossible it is to find anything in the middle of the ocean on the surface . Underwater forget it. I’m sorry but the chances of finding these people alive is not even remotely good.

  • Abbey on June 22, 2023 1:20 am

I wonder if they put a bunch of submersible lights in the ocean and send out little rc submarines with cameras if they could see were they are not just people. They also make underwater metal detectors.

  • Gerhard Schneider on June 21, 2023 9:46 pm

this sub should have redundant back up communication equipment of a different design, external sonar beepers, so the sub can be located and the iron ballasts should be held in place by electro magnets which can be reversed to to attract or repel this ballast.

The design should have been reviewed by safety engineers, not members of the design team.

    • Anonymous on June 22, 2023 3:24 pm

The owner/builder refused all recommendations to make it safe!!!

  • Cap Ahab on June 21, 2023 9:07 pm

Reading the comments -I see envy, hate and fear of people. Everyday 500 people die, senselessly in car crashes… Tech and people can fail. Risk-taking is what moves humanity. The risk averse are still sitting on a tree branch screeching. Let’s hope for a soeedy recovery!

    • Miguel Melo on June 22, 2023 8:23 am

If I am paying 250.000 dollars to visit the titanic, I believe it is to be expected better equipment than a playstation controller to navigate or any other half-assed cheap part.
I bet that the first thing you do after purchasing a new car is to remove the safety belts and the airbag, just because risk is always worth taking.

    • Anonymous on June 22, 2023 5:49 am

In engineering and science failure is natural, but repeating a failure is plain stupid. This could have been avoided if expertise and experience was a priority.

  • Debbie Vallance on June 21, 2023 8:38 pm

I would Never trust my life on a Control to a video game, or a craft that loses control of contacting the launching ship in any case of emergency. The craft Should Not have been permitted use until approved.

  • Keyva on June 21, 2023 8:35 pm

Why can’t we remember things and ppl as they are, there are so many ppl who need money housing and these rich ppl jeopardize there lives to see a old boat we know what happened just remember it as it was. Im praying for them God cover them but let’s think on how we can do good deeds for the living and things in the world

  • Emily Kidd on June 21, 2023 6:47 pm

My prayers is with the people who is the submarine God be with them

    • David Owens on June 21, 2023 7:55 pm

Everyone should be praying for God’s hand to save the people who are lost in this mini sub

      • Anonymous on June 21, 2023 11:00 pm

History indicates that God doesn’t actually intervene.

          Ain’t that the truth

        • Godfrey Jones on June 22, 2023 1:34 am

So far god has not done much of anything to save anyone… ever. In a world where kids are getting murdered, I imagine god’s priorities aren’t with multimillionaires on a deep sea joy ride.

        • Anonymous on June 22, 2023 12:29 am

This x trillion. It amazes me how religious people say they pray for god to save lives. If god existed, you’d think it would have prevented the sub missing in the first place.

It reminds me of the great quote:
Prayer. How to say you’re helping by doing absolutely nothing.

          • MSM on June 22, 2023 1:03 pm

God gave us a free will to choose our actions. He doesn’t control us like some dictator who gives us no choice. You don’t believe in God, that is your choice. He will not force His will on you or anyone else.

U HAVE ONLY ONE LIFE…. WHY TAKE A RISK LIKE THAT..?.IS NOT ONLY YOU ARE GOING TO DIE, IS THE WAY THESE HUMAN BEINGS ARE GOING TO SUFFER. HOPE TO FIND THEM SOON

    • Oceana on June 22, 2023 4:06 am

Actually the billionaire said whatever happened would be so quick that they wouldn’t even know it! Let’s hope he was right.

  • Anonymous on June 21, 2023 5:54 pm

The billionaire’s risk/reward ratio was insanely low considering he could’ve built a REAL submarine. Could’ve spent less than $100M and still be alive with his billions 🤦🏻‍♂️ It makes so little sense

    • Lisa on June 21, 2023 6:24 pm

I thought this, I think he is in aerospace aswell so I’m sure the contacts were there. Can you even believe they didn’t even put a GPS tracker on it. Unbelievable.

      • Jason on June 21, 2023 8:01 pm

You think satellites can triangulate an object 2 miles deep into the ocean?

        • Steve on June 21, 2023 10:48 pm

The United States probably have spy satellites that do that, I am sure we have the technology now, we have already used it on other planets that are in our solar system,

          • Cb on June 22, 2023 7:27 am

No,they never found the Malaysia plane the went missing.

          • Charles on June 22, 2023 4:05 am

Steve, light doesn’t penetrate below 1000 m so a spy satellite can’t see. Impossible. Use some critical thinking next time before spouting or nonsense.

        • Rob on June 21, 2023 8:53 pm

A scuttled submarine could launch a life vest with GPS tracker from a torpedo tube. Seems like building something like that on the side of this would of limited the search and could of had a manual override in the event of losing power.

      • Iris on June 21, 2023 7:11 pm

        GPS doesn’t work under water…

  • Rosamonde Gee on June 21, 2023 5:07 pm

    I’m speachless

  • Jay barmack on June 21, 2023 3:11 pm

I believe by the amount of risk taken a vessel like that should be as close to 100pct as possible no one should have to pay that Sum of money with the assurances so low just think about it trauma
Death disability or emotional problems I believe vessels like that need to be inspected and not dubbed experimental
I do hope they can get to those 5 brave people and the outcome will be 5 saved life’s and they go back to their loved ones

    • Jay E on June 21, 2023 6:15 pm

No degree of inspection should ever qualify that “vessel” as anything other than experimental. The same was actually in some corners said about the space shuttles. The 5 trapped below the ocean are not the brave ones. We should reserve that for the people risking their own lives to rescue them.

  • Brenda McHale on June 21, 2023 2:20 pm

May God keep his hands and arms around them May they come home soon,

Me too! I believe that Disneyland sub is why I am afraid of water and also can become claustrophobic. I’m 61 now!

      That’s one great salesman

      • Dan on June 22, 2023 12:05 am

Salesman is going down with the ship too. Imagine the arguments down there.

  • Tanya Jones-Robertson on June 21, 2023 12:39 pm

Wow, my prayers are with them for a safe return

  • Ed on June 21, 2023 12:02 pm

Big lesson here: people flag ships in weird ways (carrying a sub without registering it, operating out of the US but flagged in Panama) to avoid the law. The only reason to do so is a criminal one.

OceanGate should be shut down, it’s assets seized, and a new international Treasury established that days we WILL NOT waste millions on a rescue effort that is only necessary because a greedy 1%er cut corners and built an unsafe vessel.

  • Eleanor Murray on June 21, 2023 11:48 am

If trips to Mt. Everest were as poorly researched and prepared as this rich man’s submersible plaything, there would be International shock and outcry.
I expect our governments to be reimbursed for the enormous expense they are incurring in this search and rescue/retrieval effort but have doubts it will happen. Sigh.

    • Stephanie on June 22, 2023 8:38 am

There actually is international outcry about trips up Everest right now, fyi.

    • Anonymous on June 21, 2023 7:47 pm
    • Popeye on June 21, 2023 5:55 pm

OceanGate hasn’t turned a profit yet so don’t hold your breath (no pun intended) waiting for them to pay the bill for the international search and rescue resources.

  • Ricardo Walker on June 21, 2023 9:46 am

What’s to see a ship wreck that happens decades ago what’s say you saw a bunch of sea weed on a wreckage a waste of money and life the government should band all companies that that do this type of suicide missions knowing there’s chance of non surviving people taking risk at $250.000 00 we have people starving homeless it’s about greed now the lost of life hopefully not.

    • Chuck Smooth on June 21, 2023 6:06 pm

It’s their money and they can do what they want with it. The homeless are not their concern.

      • Roxanne on June 21, 2023 6:21 pm

If it’s their money, their right, then we shouldn’t be spending millions to find them. My heart aches for the 19 year old that isn’t mature enough to make a possible life ending decision like that. What it wrong with his parents!!!

    • Wayne carron on June 21, 2023 6:01 pm

You could say that about anything. Why buy a new $35,000 car when you could buy a used one for 10k that would work just as well and you could give the difference to the poor.
