What just happened? Canon has introduced its most affordable EOS R series camera to date. The new EOS R100 packs a 24.2 megapixel APS-C size sensor alongside a DIGIC 8 image processor, and uses a Dual Pixel CMOS AF system that breaks scenes up into 143 AF zones. Eye Detection AF is also an option when your subject's full body is in frame.

Canon's latest can continuously shoot at up to 6.5 shots per second, and longtime smartphone photographers might get some mileage out of the Creative Assist and Creative Filters features. The camera's electronic shutter could come in handy when shooting in sound sensitive environments like during a recital or when a baby is sleeping.

The EOS R100 is compatible with the complete lineup of RF and RF-S lenses, and Canon notes that EF and EF-S lenses can be utilized when using one of three available Canon EF-EOS R mount adapters.

On the video side, the EOS R100 can capture full HD video at up to 60 frames per second (or 120 FPS with a lower bit rate) and 4K quality at up to 24 frames a second.

The EOS R100 is also the most compact and lightweight camera in the EOS R series. The body measures approximately 116.3 mm x 85.5 mm x 68.8 mm (4.58 in × 3.37 in × 2.71 in) and weighs roughly 356 grams, or 12.56 ounces, with the battery and a memory card installed.

Canon said the EOS R100 was designed for first-time mirrorless camera users or those that previously liked working with its EOS Rebel or EOS M cameras. Indeed, its specs and capabilities are not going to knock your socks off if you have much experience with dedicated cameras. Instead, think of it as the next step beyond smartphone photography. A camera like the EOS R100 will let you get your feet wet without being too overwhelming.

The new EOS R100 will be available in July 2023 priced at $479.99 for the body only.
