Debt ceiling negotiations stall: James Carville says 'it's an expensive game that they are playing'

Debt ceiling talks between White House and Republican negotiators came to a halt on Friday, with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) telling reporters, “we’ve got to get movement by the White House. And we don’t have any movement yet.” Meanwhile, a White House official told Yahoo Finance “there are real differences between the parties on budget issues and talks will be difficult.” Longtime Democratic strategist James Carville told Yahoo Finance’s Seana Smith and Akiko Fujita that when it comes to debt talks, both Republicans and Democrats are feeling pressure. Carville said he is "scared to death" of a default, adding "it's an expensive game that they are playing." Part of the reason for Carville's concern is that Republicans "think they can damage the United States and in the process of damaging the United States, they can damage Joe Biden." "I'm not totally confident that they will come around and do what's in the interest of the United States. I hope I'm wrong," Carville said. As for Democrats, Carville says they should be emphasizing how former President Donald Trump's spending contributed to the debt, but that so far, "our communications effort to this point has been negligible." He also said Democrats should remind voters that the choice is "to default or not to default." Longer-term, he says they should focus on emphasizing the economy, "if we keep this economy going, people will feel the effects of it." US debt ceiling talks resume as default date ticks closer

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Republican U.S. lawmakers resumed negotiations with President Joe Biden's Democratic administration on Friday on raising the federal government's $31.4 trillion debt ceiling, top congressional Republican Kevin McCarthy said. Talks resumed hours after being paused by McCarthy's lead negotiator and Biden's representatives, which rattled financial markets as the deadline ticked closer to avoid default. "We'll be back in the room tonight," McCarthy said in an interview on Fox Business.

American and JetBlue must end alliance, US judge rules

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -American Airlines Group must end its alliance with JetBlue Airways Corp, a federal judge ruled on Friday, agreeing with the U.S. Justice Department that the arrangement means higher prices for consumers and ordering the companies to part ways within 30 days. The decision represented a victory for President Joe Biden's administration, which has taken a hard line on consolidation and tie-ups in the aviation industry. The Justice Department, six states and the District of Columbia sued in 2021 to unwind the deal announced in 2020, calling the "Northeast Alliance" a "de facto merger" of the American and JetBlue Boston and New York operations that removes incentives for them to compete.

China's loans pushing world’s poorest countries to brink of collapse

A dozen poor countries are facing economic instability and even collapse under the weight of hundreds of billions of dollars in foreign loans, much of them from the world’s biggest and most unforgiving government lender, China. An Associated Press analysis of a dozen countries most indebted to China — including Pakistan, Kenya, Zambia, Laos and Mongolia — found paying back that debt is consuming an ever-greater amount of the tax revenue needed to keep schools open, provide electricity and pay for food and fuel.

US House hardliners could try to block debt-ceiling deal without 'robust' cuts

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -President Joe Biden and Republican U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy have voiced growing confidence about striking a debt-ceiling deal to avoid a catastrophic default, but they could be tripped up by last-minute opposition from the hardline House Freedom Caucus. The small but powerful Republican faction warned this week that they could try to block any agreement to raise the $31.4 trillion debt ceiling from passing the House of Representatives, if the accord does not contain "robust" federal spending cuts.

Powell Comments Lower Expectations of Rate Hike

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said Friday that stresses in the banking system mean the policy rate may not need to rise as much as previously expected to tame inflation. Developments in the banking sector “are contributing to tighter credit conditions and are likely to weigh on economic growth, hiring and inflation,” he said, speaking on a monetary policy panel at a research conference in Washington. The comments lowered market expectations of an eleventh rate hike June 14.

Disney parks chief Josh D'Amaro said "changing business conditions" prompted Disney to reconsider its 2021 plan to relocate employees, including its Imagineers who design theme park rides, to a new campus in Lake Nona. The company was expected to spend as much as $864 million on the project, according to the Orlando Sentinel, on a campus that would have served as a base for Walt Disney Imagineering and the Disney Parks, Experiences and Products division.
