LG TVs recalled over fire risk Featured

Various 65in and 77in LG smart TVs manufactured between February 2016 and September 2019 have been recalled because deteriorating components can start fires.

The affected models are 65E6, 65G6, 77G6, 65B7, 65C7, 65E7, 65G7, 65W7, 77W7, 65W8, 77C8, 77W8, 65W9, 77C9 and 77W9. They were widely sold around the country.

The problem is that capacitors fitted to the power board can deteriorate to the point where they fail and possibly emit smoke and flame.

Owners are advised to contact LG on 1800 643 156 to arrange for the power board to be replaced. In the event that irreparable damage has occurred, the TV will be replaced free of charge.

If flame or smoke occurs, they are warned not to use any liquid to extinguish the fire due to the risk of electrocution. Rather, they should "Immediately leave the vicinity of the tv and turn the main power to the property off."

It would seem sensible to avoid using an affected TV until it has been repaired.

An LG spokesperson said "As LG Electronics uses non-flammable materials that meet international safety standards for TV products, any overheating is extremely unlikely to lead to fire but could in extreme cases pose a potential electrical hazard. We encourage all LG TV owners of affected models to contact us and arrange a replacement power board to prevent the issue."

Earlier this year LG issued a recall for its 86in UQ900 and NANO75 TVs after it was determined that incorrect installation of the stand could result in the TV toppling over.
