Build a Better Resume as a UI/UX Designer (ft. ChatGPT)

I ask ChatGPT, How can I Build a Better Resume?

I was recently looking for a job. I don’t know about other countries, but in India, a resume is a must.

So I decided to ask ChatGPT how I can make my resume better and more attention-grabbing so that it can grab the attention of recruiters or employers.

Here's what ChatGPT said to me:

12 Tips to Build a Better Resume by ChatGPT

Here are some tips that ChatGPT has suggested to me about building a better resume as a designer.

You may feel some of them are basic, but actually, they are foundations for building a good resume.

We Basic Tips First You Should Consider

First of all, let’s cover the basic points that are essential to building a good resume. Let’s see what ChatGPT suggested to us.

  4. Highlight your Problem-Solving Skills

When I first asked about the tips, ChatGPT gave me the basics, but I knew them all, so I told ChatGPT to tell me something unique, and here we are with our 8th point:

and some more tips for you.

9. Use Design Thinking Principles

10. Incorporate UX writing

11. Build it for the Recruiters/Employers

12. Show your Passion for Design

ChatGPT is kind of at the end of words, so it suggested this next point of passion for design. You can make anything of it. You have to show that you have some interest in design by showing your projects and proof of work.

My Personal 5 Tips for Resume Building

Now let me suggest to you some tips that I have learned personally from my experience and the time I have put into building a great resume for myself.

#1 Take Some Inspiration

Good design comes from nothing but design itself.

Take some inspiration from the internet about resume design. I suggest you go and check out Pinterest; it’s one of the best sites for inspiration.

#2 PDF or Docs?

Some people think that Docs helps the ATS scan the keywords better, but that’s not always correct.

Having your resume in PDF form is good enough, as the ATS can scan it easily and the design you want the recruiter to see will be there.

However, as documents can adjust their sizes according to the devices, they can make your resume layout look bad and be hard to read.

So, it is better to use the PDF format when building a resume.

#3 Clean and Simple

Make your resume layout clean and simple.

I suggest people not experiment with resumes. Let them be simple and clean. I prefer black text on a white background for my clean resume.

I don’t like to add colors to the resume; yes, you can add the colors, but make sure you’re not overdoing it and that the contrast of the color is good.

If a recruiter has to print your resume, it should look the same on the page too.

#4 Add Keywords (Build it for Applicant Tracking System)

Build your resume for the ATS by adding the keywords you find in your job description.

Some common keywords I found on many job descriptions for UI/UX designer jobs are UI/UX, Prototyping, Front-end Development, Figma, Adobe Xd, User Research, User Testing, HTML&CSS, etc.

#5 Use Your Typography Well

A resume is nothing but text; you can use pictures, but I don’t like adding pictures to the resume, not even a profile picture.

So the thing that is left on my resume is nothing but text, so I have to make sure it’s perfectly aligned and looks hierarchical. Define your heading, subheading, text, and subtext.

Build a typography design system for your resume, as it will help you a lot in the future when you want to add some experience or update your resume layout.

I love experimenting with my resume layout, but I always stick to the basics, i.e., a clean, black-and-white resume.

So these are some of the tips that I recommend you follow to build a resume that gets you a job.

But remember, resumes can’t be made; they can only be built on the work and experiences you have, so if your resume is looking too blank, go out in the world and do some good things.
