MetaMask Refutes Allegations of Wallet Exploit in Staggering $10M Hack

Cryptocurrency wallet provider MetaMask has rejected allegations that a security exploit within its wallet is responsible for a considerable wallet-draining operation that resulted in the theft of over 5,000 Ether. On April 18, MetaMask addressed a series of tweets by Taylor Monahan, the founder of Ethereum wallet manager MyCrypto, who detailed an unidentified wallet-draining exploit that had pilfered more than $10.5 million in cryptocurrencies and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) since December 2022. MetaMask refuted Monahan’s claims, stating that recent reports have inaccurately attributed the massive wallet-draining operation to a MetaMask exploit.

MetaMask clarified that the stolen 5,000 ETH originated from various addresses across 11 blockchains, asserting that the notion of funds being hacked from MetaMask is incorrect. The MetaMask team disclosed that they have been conducting thorough research but have yet to determine how the incident transpired.

Numerous independent security researchers have also been probing the matter. One theory suggests a potential leak of private keys or seed phrases could be the cause. MetaMask confirmed that its security team is actively examining the source of the exploit and collaborating with others in the Web3 wallet space to find answers.

No Clear Explanation for the Massive Attack

In her tweets, Monahan admitted that no one knows precisely how the colossal attack occurred. However, her best guess was that the attacker accessed a significant amount of outdated data and used it to extract the funds. Initially, Monahan claimed that the hacker had targeted long-time MetaMask users and employees through the MetaMask platform.

However, she later acknowledged that the exploit is not exclusive to MetaMask. Instead, the security breach has affected users of various wallets, including those created on hardware wallets.
