In more than two months, Alphabet Inc has seen the fastest decline in its stock price in a single day. The fundamentals seem to be going against Google. This happened after reports emerged suggesting that Samsung Electronics Co. is beginning to consider replacing Google with Microsoft’s Bing as the default search engine on its devices.

Samsung is Negotiating with Google Before Switching to Bing

This came as a sudden shock to Google and its employees after they learned about Samsung’s new plan in March. The New York Times gave the report on Sunday citing internal messages. Having Google as the default search engine on all Samsung devices is actually there because of a contract agreement between both tech giants. As it stands now, negotiation is still on-going to renew the contract. However, if things don’t go so well between both companies, the worse may happen and Google will definitely bear most of the pain.

Alphabet’s market share dropped by 4% when market opened in New York, This accounts to the biggest drop for the company since February this year. On the flip side, Microsoft saw a rise of 1.7%.

In recent weeks, Google’s search engine has seen its dominance being threatened by Microsoft Bing. The Bing search engine has gotten stronger after the addition of OpenAI’s technology. The ability of Microsoft’s search engine to provide ChatGPT-like responses to users has increased its popularity.

According to report by The Times, Google is also working on a new AI project to face Microsoft’s threats. The report says that about 160 engineers are currently working on a project called Magi. This project includes Artificial Intelligence that will help boost Google’s services.

Lara Levin, a spokeswoman for Google has made a statement about Google’s ongoing project. She said, Google is “excited about bringing new AI-powered features to search and will share more details soon.” Both Google and Samsung representatives have declined commenting on the current negotiation between the two companies.

Samsung Already Has Deals with Apple and Microsoft

According to data from IDC, Samsung shipped over 261 million devices in 2022. All these phones came with Google’s Android installed on them. Samsung also has good relationships with both Microsoft and Google. Samsung devices usually come with pre-loaded apps from both companies. Such apps include OneDrive from Microsoft and Maps from Google.

Google commands the market share in the US and other parts of the world with its deal with both Apple Inc. and Samsung. The company’s deal with these two companies alone has a value of about $20 billion in revenue according to reports from Times. Google will end up losing the larger part of this revenue if negotiation with Samsung fails.
