Apple TV+ holds steady with 6% U.S. streaming market share as Netflix cedes first place
Friday, April 14, 2023 4:34 pm12 Comments
In new research data from JustWatch, Apple TV+ held 6% of the streaming platform market share in the United States during the first quarter of 2023, 9to5Mac reports.
Netflix used to be the streaming platform with the most users in the US, but that has changed recently. In the latest ranking, Netflix is now in second place with 20% of the market share, coming right behind Amazon Prime Video with 21%. Another impressive growth was that of Paramount+, whose market share increased from 4% to 7%, overtaking Apple TV+.
During the first quarter of 2023, the number of Apple TV+ subscribers remained about the same.
Right now, this is the market share situation for streaming platforms in the United States:
1. Amazon Prime Video: 21%
2. Netflix: 20%
3. Disney+: 15%
4. HBO Max: 14%
5. Hulu: 11%
6. Paramount+: 7%
7. Apple TV+: 6%
8. Others: 6%
MacDailyNews Take: This is a marathon, not a sprint. Apple TV+ prioritizes quality over quantity, but, over time, the quantity builds – nearly all of it high quality content. Apple TV+ remains a huge value at just $6.99/month – ever more so as part of an Apple One bundle.

I’ve FINALLY started to enjoy more and more shows on TV+.
I know there is still a lot of woke crap but that’s everywhere.A few niggles with this list-
Prime gets many subscribers by default from people wanting the cheaper shipping (like me). It UI is a shitshow, just like their music app.
Disney is basically given away because their numbers are so bad. We had them for a few months but after finishing Get Back I dropped it along with fellow B.S. Wokester ESPN (they were bundled).
I consider HBO, Netflix and Hulu the real competition. We dropped Hulu after bingeing what we liked, still have Netflix even though I hate it, dropped HBO after promotional period.
Still have Prime (by default), Apple, Paramount and Discovery+.
Your mileage may vary….

Tired of everyone complaining that everything they don’t happen to like in this world is somehow “woke” (like sleeping through life is somehow better, to extend the metaphor)?
Can you tell me — specifically — what’s “woke” on AppleTV+??
Is it just a matter of simple kindness (like on “Ted Lasso”)? Or that some corporations may be evil (like on “Severence”)? Or that male bosses having sex with women employees may not always be fully consensual (like on “The Morning Show”)?
Seriously, I’m curious to hear more…

No, you’re not. You’re looking for an argument.
Seriously, if you are that in touch with what is going on in the world and claim to NOT understand what wokeness is and need examples of it how do you expect me to explain in a blog?
If I give you examples of finding racism in math or being OK for men to use girl’s bathroom, men claiming to be women so they can compete against women, allowing riots to happen in the same area for weeks on end, universities banning people because they are Conservative and it sends them to a safe space just thinking about them speaking, are you saying you’ve never heard of these?
So no, I’ll not engage you in this silliness.
-
you seem to have all the empty mind talking points.

TowerTone
You seem to know them.
What a whacked-out putz.

Tone – I wasn’t asking for examples of “wokeness” — I was asking about examples of “wokeness” in AppleTV+ programming. Which you still haven’t provided.
And of the examples you do cite, most of them are either total bullshit, or a huge exaggeration. Men don’t “claim to be women” so they can compete against them, or so they can sneak into a woman’s bathroom; you know that’s not the case. No one “allowed” riots to happen for weeks on end, but they DID allow protests, some of which were accompanied by looting (often by people UNCONNECTED to the riots).
Of course, we were talking about television shows, not the world at large, so the only silliness on this thread is from you.
Your turn…

I have Netflix because of T-Mobile.
I have Disney+, Hulu and ESPN because of American Express Platinum card. I don’t have Prime because stuff gets ship fast anyway.
I have Apple+ because I have Apple OneNetflix is still my go to. Disney doesn’t really have that many stuff once you watch the good ones.
Apple TV still continues to increase their contents. -

So basically tied for last place with “others”. Great use of time and resources for the last few years. Instead of leading with a.i. Apple has focused on the “no” type distractions Steve warned about. Is this the first cracks in the fall of Apple or can Tim and Co find a vision for the future that everyone will buy into. Time will tell

any other news local community access channels is tied for last place in market share with Apple TV+

No… EVERY other streaming channel COMBINED is equal to Apple’s share. That includes some fairly well-known brand names including the BBC, Discovery+, Syfy, AMC+, Tube, Vudu, YouTubeTV (formerly Freeform), BritBox, MGM+, and at least a dozen others.
As for the lowly 6% market share, that’s exactly what Apple’s share of the computer market was back just 9 years ago, which was a huge jump from the THREE PERCENT of sales (by unit) for the period from 2000 to 2010.

I agree with MDN’s take here: Apple is in this for the long haul, and they appear to be taking on the “quality” mantle that the bean counters at Discovery have apparently ripped away from HBO. Owning the content is as important as owning the delivery vehicle — maybe even more so…

antiquated and beyond
bla bla bla, almost no content apple has will be watchable in 10 years. Name one classic film that Apple has produced that will stand the test of time. It’s mostly dull watered down boring woke social agenda soup. The classic show Friends and the Office are currently transitioning to “canceled” for being social insensitive. Haven’t you learned anything ? Socially approved content is a moving target where they constantly move the goal post of what is social acceptable to represent. Heck in 5 years apple will remove much of its content on its own accord for not being inclusive enough.
Instead of playing house apple needs get their butts moving on A.I. cause, like their streaming service, they are currently in last place.

Friends and The Office are still two of the biggest shows on TV these days. They’ve hardly been “canceled”. And, yeah, some of Apple’s content will stand the test of time, while most won’t. Which is roughly the same as every other media company around, except maybe for HBO (but a lot of their shows end up forgotten, too).
