Senate Panel Accuses Credit Suisse of Abetting ‘Ongoing’ Tax Evasion. It Might Be UBS’ Problem Soon.
Credit Suisse’s culture is now back in focus as it faces a fresh round of allegations of “an ongoing, potentially criminal tax conspiracy” involving undeclared offshore accounts, according to a new report from the Senate Finance Committee. The committee’s two-year investigation long predates the UBS takeover and stems from the plea agreement Credit Suisse struck in 2014 involving allegations that it helped U.S. citizens dodge taxes through undeclared offshore accounts. Credit Suisse pleaded guilty to conspiracy to aid and assist U.S. taxpayers in filing false returns and agreed to pay $2.6 billion to federal and state authorities to resolve the matter.
