Windows 12 promises to be the modern version everyone wanted

Do you recall the Windows Core OS project that aimed to transform Windows 10 into a more modular, modern, lightweight, and easily updated product while discarding outdated features? This initiative led to the conception of Windows 10X, which was eventually shelved. However, development has persisted, as reported by Zac Bowden from Windows Central. He claims that Microsoft is working on a new project codenamed CorePC. Which seeks to modernize the Windows platform using many of the innovations initially intended for Windows Core OS. The primary focus of CorePC is to ensure native compatibility for legacy Win32 applications on devices where it makes sense to do so.

CorePC is envisioned as a modular and customizable variant of Windows that can adapt to various form factors. Such as foldable devices or those with dual screens. This is why the emphasis is placed on products where it makes sense. To support legacy Win32 apps and adjust to different shapes. Modularity plays a significant role here, allowing CorePC to configure “editions” of Windows. With varying levels of functionality and app compatibility.

Windows 12 will be like Chrome OS and Android

Bowden highlights a key difference between CorePC and Windows 11: state separation. This feature enables faster updates and a more secure platform through read-only partitions that are inaccessible to users and third-party apps, similar to iPadOS, Android, and CoreOS. In contrast to Windows 11, which installs itself in a single writable partition containing system files, user data, and programs, CorePC divides the operating system into multiple partitions. This allows for a faster and more reliable system restore functionality, similar to Chromebooks.

Microsoft’s objective is to compete with Chromebooks. A version of Windows that exclusively runs Edge, Web apps, Android apps (via Project Latte), and Office apps, specifically designed for low-end educational PCs, is currently being tested internally. This iteration is reportedly 60-75% smaller than Windows 11 SE.

However, this is just the beginning. Microsoft is also developing a compatibility layer called Neon for legacy apps that require a shared state OS to function. In addition, the company is keeping an eye on Apple, which has revolutionized the PC world with its proprietary chips. Consequently, Microsoft is planning a CorePC release that minimizes legacy overhead, emphasizes AI capabilities, and vertically optimizes hardware and software experiences in a manner reminiscent of Apple Silicon.

AI has become an integral component of Windows. And enhancing its integration is a primary objective for the platform in 2024. Potential applications include allowing Windows to analyze displayed content and provide contextual prompts to initiate projects or apps automatically. Windows may also be able to identify objects and text within images. Enabling users to easily cut and paste those items elsewhere.

Windows 12 features

Bowden cautions that Microsoft’s plans could change over time. But the company is looking to develop CorePC for Windows 12 in 2024, which is codenamed Hudson Valley. This new project signifies Microsoft’s commitment to modernizing the Windows platform. Addressing the needs of a diverse range of devices, and leveraging AI to enhance user experiences. With CorePC, Microsoft aims to compete not only with Chromebooks but also with Apple. While maintaining compatibility with legacy applications when needed. As development continues, it will be interesting to see how CorePC shapes the future of Windows. And the broader PC landscape.

We have no features on Windows 12’s existence by Microsoft, but there have been leaks and experiments with new features. Recent builds for Windows Insider users show new visual treatments for Search in the Taskbar and notification badges for the weather widget. Microsoft is also testing a smart feature for quicker task completion. These features may or may not come to Windows 12, but Windows Insiders will be the first to test them. Satya Nadella revealed a new UI prototype at Microsoft Ignite 2022. Which may be part of the official Windows 12 release. Windows 12 is being designed for both touch and mouse and keyboard interaction. And Microsoft is separating the desktop from explorer.exe.
