Oppo and OnePlus have been struggling in Europe due to a patent dispute with Nokia. It prevented them from advertising their products in Germany. The companies are also facing a shrinking smartphone market in Europe, which doesn’t bode well for their prospects. Reports suggest that the two BBK Electronics-owned entities are now preparing to exit most, if not all, European markets, including the UK.
According to Chinese publication 36Kr, Oppo is getting ready to pull the plug in Germany and the UK. The company has been operating at a loss. And while there is interest in its devices in Europe, the return on investment isn’t high. Oppo’s slow approach to European markets made sense in the past. But concerns about macroeconomic developments such as inflation, the Russian invasion of Ukraine. And a shrinking smartphone market have changed the brand’s mind.
Max Jambor, a prolific leaker, reports that OnePlus is also leaving Europe. Both companies are starting their retreat with Germany, the UK, France, and the Netherlands. They will remain in Spain, Switzerland, Italy, and a few more European markets for now. But this could change long term.
This development isn’t good news for competition and will lead to fewer choices for users. Before these reports, OnePlus and Oppo already lost a patent dispute with Nokia in Germany. Which stopped the companies from launching their products in the country. Oppo set up its European headquarters in Germany. So this may have been one of the factors that ultimately tipped the scales in favor of leaving.
So far, there is no word on other BBK Electronics brands. Vivo doesn’t seem to be affected by the decision for now. And the company has recently introduced its latest flagship phone, the Vivo X90 Pro. However, this doesn’t seem to be a factor for OnePlus and Oppo. Oppo launched the Find N2 Flip in Europe just a few months ago. And OnePlus made its OnePlus 11 flagship available in the region, too.
Update: In response to the reports, OnePlus and Oppo denied the reports claiming they want to leave Europe.
