NASA alerts: A big Asteroid is nearing Earth!

Asteroid NASA

The theme of asteroids or big rocks falling onto Earth and causing a rampage is well-known. These have been the trend among science-fiction moves in the past two decades. And they had a certain appeal because it’s common for people to wonder if the same could happen in real life. Well, the chances may not be so big, but still exist. After all, we don’t know much about the space apart from what is told. In the past few days, a big Asteroid has become the center of multiple controversies and concerns.

Space agencies around the world, including NASA, are on alert as a gigantic 89 feet wide Asteroid is set to pass by Earth today. NASA has warned that this space rock, titled Asteroid 2023 CJ1, will make its closes approach to Earth today. But don’t worry (for now) the closest means a distance of 4.8 million kilometers. That is a lot, right? Well, more or less. According to the report, this is a relatively small number in astronomical distances.

Nasa is constantly watching Asteroids

If we take in mind how big the asteroid is, the distance becomes even smaller. It is dashing toward Earth at an impressive 25755 Km/h. That’s basically the double speed of a hypersonic ballistic missile. For now, the agencies state that there is no reason for concern. But still, they are observing the asteroid for the next few hours as it passes by Earth.

NASA is well known for studying asteroids and other celestial bodies. The company has a new impact monitoring system. It uses an algorithm with name Sentry-II. It works to calculate the impact risk of Near-Earth objects. With the system, the agency can track the orbital path of the Asteroid. Through infrared data, it can even predict the orbit of such bodies into the future. As of now, nearly 28,000 near-Earth asteroids have been discovered. So far, none of them pose a real threat to Earth. However, we can’t discard possible threats in the future. That’s why space agencies are already testing forms to change course, or even destroy these asteroids if needed.

Back in 2022, NASA sent its Space Probe – Dart – with the goal of deviating an asteroid on September 26, 2022. The operation was the first test of the company’s capacity to move away celestial bodies from colliding with Earth.
