据中国铁路官方数据，截至2022年11月底， 我国西部12个省区市的铁路营业里程达到6.2万公里，占全国的41％，其中高铁1.1万公里，占全国的26％。
仅仅在过去的10年间，我国西部就新增铁路营业里程2.5万公里，相当于过往历史总和的2/3。
过去的10年间，西部地区相继开通了：
乌将铁路、西宝高铁、拉日铁路、兰新高铁、贵广高铁、南广铁路、哈林铁路(额哈段)、成渝高铁、南昆高铁、宝兰高铁、兰渝铁路、西成高铁、渝贵高铁、成贵高铁、敦煌铁路、银兰高铁、阿富准铁路、格库铁路、银西高铁、大临铁路、拉林铁路、绵泸高铁(内自泸段)、中老铁路、酒额铁路(酒东段)、新成昆铁路、阿阿铁路(阿克苏-阿拉尔)、和若铁路、郑渝高铁(襄万段)、大瑞铁路(大保段)、南凭高铁、弥蒙高铁……
