Common UX Design Mistakes

In today’s world, you cannot promote your business without having a digital presence. You will need to design a website or app to convey your idea to your audience.

A good user experience promotes your business while a poor user experience will damage your business. So it’s very much important to provide your users with a smooth and hassle-free user experience. If you have a triumph to provide an excellent user experience, you must avoid some common mistakes which beginners usually make.

1. Inconsistent Design

Nowadays there is so much variety in design choices and trends that you can add multiple design ideas to your website. However, keep in mind that doing this action may lead you toward an inconsistent design. You must stick to the same user interface elements and design choices on all pages of your website or application.

If you use different design patterns and user interface elements, then your users might get confused and they would not be able to find out what they were looking for and finally, they would leave your website with no positive feedback.

2. Irrelevant CTA

CTA is abbreviated as “Call to Action”. CTA is used in websites that ask your users to do some action. Your CTA must tell your users what type of action you are asking them to do. Your CTA must contain concise information which communicates the action properly to your users. This will provide your users with a good user experience. If your CTA fails to communicate proper information then your users will not be able to catch up with your idea and they may leave your website disappointed.

3. Overloaded Information

Don’t make your website too rich with information, UI elements, and designs. This will give you no benefit but rather create hurdles for your website to load faster. These days’ slow websites are annoying enough to divert user traffic from your webpage. Also, this can puzzle your users and divert their attention from the real purpose of coming to your website.

4. Hidden Navigation

Improper navigation is the root cause of the failure of your website. Navigation buttons must be clearly visible to your user. You must ensure that your users can go from one page to another page smoothly and if they need to search for something on your webpage, then they can do it on the search bar. Now positioning of navigation keys is totally on you. Keep in mind that do not place the navigation keys in such a position that your user may not see them, or face difficulty finding out your navigation options.

5. Misuse of Pop-ups

You must have noticed that whenever you land on the landing page of the website, pop-ups start appearing on your screen. Pop-ups are used to attract users to your idea by providing concise and relevant information. You must be careful regarding the size and timing of the display of your pop-up.

If your pop-up is too large then it might cover a large portion of the screen and the users may feel irritated by this interruption and leave your website annoyed. Therefore reduce its size up to that extent where it covers a very small portion of the screen and the user continues his working freely.

Moreover, give users the option to dismiss the pop-up instead the user has to wait for the time limit set by you to let the pop-up get vanished.

6. Giving More Importance to Aesthetics

As stated earlier that nowadays there are so many design choices that designers may select most of them and make their websites very rich in design and aesthetics. But remember only designs and aesthetics are not important. What matters the most is the functionality of your website. If your website is very charming and appealing but fails to provide a good user experience then it is of no use.

Using too many design colors, shades, etc. might end up distracting your users. So you have to create a balance between both aesthetics and functionality. Take an example of a calculator on your laptop or phone. Its function is only to calculate values for you. Now if you put extra design features in it which can be fancy buttons, fancy backgrounds, different sounds, or fancy displays, then you would focus all of your attention on the fancy design instead of your real purpose to use that application.

 7. Prioritizing Yourself Over Users

While designing you must put yourself in your user’s shoes. In other words, you must have knowledge about what your user wants from you. You on your own end might find some design elements appealing but from the user’s perspective that might not be appealing but rather irritating. So you must keep in mind from the start that you are designing to satisfy your users not yourself.

8. Not Improving with Time

In the modern era, design trends are evolving very quickly. If you will not update your design according to new trends, then you may not get positive feedback from users.

If you look at some popular social media applications like Meta, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp, etc. then you will find out how these applications have evolved and changed. By looking at previous versions of these applications you will clearly notice that older versions had different UI designs while the latest versions have different ones. All this is due to changing design trends with time. So you must keep updating and improving your design in accordance with new design trends.

Conclusion

In today’s world, an incompetent design will lead you towards failure because of very high competition in the market. Because after the COVID pandemic almost everything has been digitalized. This has created a huge demand for designers in the market. So in order to compete, you must also come to their level by eliminating all the loopholes and mistakes which people make and then fail.
