It’s rough out there for a person who’s always cold. The first chill of the season sends your poor, perpetually cold loved one diving under the bedsheets, digging for the fuzzy socks, or fiddling with the thermostat when your back is turned (don’t look—they’re probably doing it now). This year, give the gift of warmth to your friend who is constantly shivering, sniffing, and suffering. From protective layers for outdoor adventures to cozy accessories, here’s how to show your hypothermic human you care.

    A Chic Space Heater

    Vornado VHEAT Vintage Metal Heater

This space heater’s got serious style. The retro exterior is modeled after Vornado's original 1945 Vornado fan, with 21st-century upgrades. It has two heat settings, a cozy 750 watts, and a steamier 1,500 watts. There's a safety shut-off feature—so your loved one doesn't have to worry while they're getting lost in a period drama marathon. I personally own Vornado’s AVH10 model, which I also recommend for its remote control and finer temperature settings. But if this is a gift, I say 'tis the season to spring for the cute one.

The youths have called it: Uggs are back in style. Say what you want about their chunky 2000s silhouette, but classic Ugg boots are my favorite shoes to slip on after a toe-numbing winter surf sesh. When I get home, I immediately change into these cute slipper versions. The inner lining is soft and fuzzy, and the back has higher coverage to protect the back of my heel from the chill.

Tea Drops Best Tea Gift Set

The only thing more comforting than a cup of tea is a cup you barely have to wait for. Instead of steeping, you can simply plop Tea Drops in a mug of hot water, where they dissolve into a lightly sweetened, aromatic pool of bliss. The "drops" are clusters of organic tea leaves, packed tightly into adorable shapes and wrapped in recyclable packets. This sampler set comes in a ribbon-ready box—a perfect gift, in other words, if you’re gunning for a shout-out on your frigid friend’s Instagram. Plus, it's one of our favorite gifts from BIPOC-owned businesses

    A Go-Anywhere Blanket

    Rumpl NanoLoft Puffy Blanket

Shield your favorite cold person from the elements and they’ll love you forever. My trusty Rumpl blanket has kept me warm for late-autumn picnics, chilly beach bonfires, winter desert camping, and just hanging out on the patio. This blanket is an investment—but it’s one that has, so far, held up to years of sand, mud, and lots and lots of dog fur. Keep it in the back of the car for spontaneous adventures, and make sure that your frigid friend’s outdoor fun doesn’t have to end when the temperature dips.

    Gravity Blanket

OK, but what if your chilly chum needs 25 pounds of pure, unadulterated blanket? Gravity is one of the OGs in the weighted blanket world. It’s not a cure-all for insomnia, says one of our editors who tested it out back in 2018. But it is warm, and it will keep your roomie swaddled like a blissful burrito all night long. Check out more of our favorite weighted blankets here.

    Hot Pockets

    Ignik Hand Warmers

Ignik’s hand warmers are the perfect stocking stuffer (uh, pocket stuffer?) for your icicle-fingered friend. Unlike the hand warmers I’ve used in the past, these are biodegradable—so it definitely eases my worries about single-use warmers. They're air-activated, so they start to heat up once you remove the warmers and give them a shake. When I tested them, they took a couple of minutes longer to heat up than I was anticipating, so be sure to give yourself a good 20 minutes before you head out into the cold. Their peak temperature, once reached, is comfortably toasty. When you’re done, simply toss them in the compost.

    A Super Soft Base Layer

    Icebreaker Siren Sweetheart Long-Sleeve Top

The secret to staying warm starts with an excellent base layer. This one from Icebreaker is slim and stretchy, with a V-shaped neckline that can slip invisibly under a sweater. The Merino wool is super breathable, so it’s a cozy pick for a wintry hike—or a night in streaming holiday movies. For more affordable options, I also like the Heattech line of base layers from Uniqlo.

    A Supremely Snuggly Jacket

    Prana Polar Escape Jacket

Ask any cold person and they’ll say their dream garment is actually just a blanket in disguise. Prana’s jacket gets as close to that as possible while giving your friend an on-trend layer for walks in the mountains or downtown. The interior lining is smooth, unlike the fuzzy exterior, but still incredibly soft. There's a drawstring at the base to tighten the waist for a more fitted look and feel, though I like wearing the jacket loose like I'm a Lumpy Space Princess fleece-cloud. It’s made from 100% recycled polyester, so it’s easy on the planet, too.

    A Toasty Headband

    Skida Headband

Don’t let the chill deter your favorite cold person from their favorite sports. My colleague Adrienne So wears her headband from Skida on cold-weather runs. These headbands are made in Vermont and are designed to keep sweat from getting in your loved one's eyes, all while keeping them protected from the headwinds. You can choose between the lightweight Nordic headband or the microfleece-lined Alpine for extra coziness. Just one question remains: Which of the (many) colors and patterns will you pick?

    A Smart Mug

    Ember Heated Coffee Mug

There’s nothing more loathsome than pouring a hot cup of coffee, forgetting about it, then swallowing a mouthful of cold, bitter bean water. Gross! Save your low-temperature loved one from odious mornings with a temperature-regulating ceramic mug. Just pour out a hot cuppa, select the desired temperature on the Ember app, and enjoy piping-hot coffee or tea all day. One WIRED editor couldn’t get enough of his Ember mug, which can also track caffeine consumption. We've linked to the new large 14-ounce model, but there are smaller sizes available as well.

  • Photograph: Hydro Flask

    A Hot To-Go Cup

    Hydro Flask All Around Tumbler

It is my theory, as a perpetually cold person, that every cold person has a favorite cozy coffee shop where they like to hide until spring. Get them a gift they can bring along to their burrowing spot. Not only does HydroFlask make an excellent insulated bottle for cold drinks (it’s actually one of WIRED’s favorite reusable bottles), but its tumbler has kept my high-concept holiday-themed drinks hot for hours.

    A Heavy-Duty Parka

    Tentree Daily Parka

This recommendation comes from fellow perpetually cold reviewer Medea Giordano, who is “in love” with this jacket. She loves the plentiful and soft pockets. Plus, the parka’s length means it’ll protect your butt from icy bus stop benches and wet snowmelt. The only thing she doesn’t love is the look of the hood—but she appreciates the pull cords, which can tighten the neck and hood area to seal in all the warmth.

  • Photograph: Girlfriend Collective

A Beanie That Warms Your Head, Not the Planet

    Girlfriend Collective Recycled Beanie

The first thing I thought when I pulled Girlfriend Collective’s beanie out of the box was this is the softest thing on earth. The second: How is this made of recycled water bottles? Girlfriend Collective’s beanie is plush and sink-in-your-fingers thick. Mine kept my head and ears toasty during early-morning dog walks and somehow also made my sweatpants goblin outfit look cute. If that’s not holiday magic, I don’t know what is.

  • Photograph: Darn Tough

    A Mighty Pair of Socks

Darn Tough Hiker Micro Crew Cushion

Whenever I poll my coworkers about the warmest socks they’ve ever tried, Darn Tough comes up again and again. WIRED reviewer Matt Jancer has worn the thicker Darn Toughs while mountain climbing in 20-degree snowstorms. These quick-drying wool ones should be enough to protect your loved one from frostbite and cold floors in the morning.

A Book to Read by the Fire

    'Bliss Montage' by Ling Ma

“Warmth” is as much a physical sensation and as much as it is a vibe. There is no warmer vibe than being piled under weighted blankets, with a space heater blasting, and reading a good book. Bliss Montage is some of the best fantastical fiction I’ve read this year (and my colleagues agree)—or you can take a look at WIRED’s other book recommendations
