美国当地时间 12 月 5 日，据路透社报道，因涉嫌侵犯动物福利的违规行为，马斯克的脑机接口公司 Neuralink 正面临美国联邦部门的调查。据称，其内部员工表示该公司的动物试验非常粗鲁，造成了不必要的痛苦和死亡。
路透社报道称，根据其查看的公司记录以及对 Neuralink 动物试验业务有直接了解的消息来源，该公司自 2018 年以来进行的动物试验，总共杀死了约 1500 只动物，其中包括 280 多只羊、猪和猴子。另外，Neuralink 还使用大鼠和小鼠进行了研究。
据报道，两位知情人士透露，美国农业部监察长应一名联邦检察官的要求，启动了这项此前未被报道的联邦调查程序。此次调查的重点是该公司违反《动物福利法》(Animal Welfare Act) 的行为，该法案规定了研究人员应如何对待和测试动物。
马斯克于 12 月 1 日表示，Neuralink 开发的无线大脑芯片将在 6 个月内开始人体临床试验，此前该公司已错过他先前设定的时间表。马斯克当天补充说，Neuralink 的大脑芯片还将致力于恢复视力。
