RACHELLE AKUFFO: The 2022 entries into the Toy Hall of Fame are out, and we have some issues with them. So this year's winners were the top, "Masters of the Universe," and Lite-Brite, but there were a few on the nominee list that I liked a bit more. Now, my pick, the pinata. I'm like, how was that not a win? That's joy for everybody and candy. And you know, you get to hit things. That's fantastic.
And then for those who love a bit of art, the Spirograph. It made you actually feel like you are good at art, even if you were trash like I was. But it gave me my confidence. I think they should have made it in there. What about you, Seana?
SEANA SMITH: Yeah, Rachelle, it's interesting. When you take a look at this, a lot of these toys are still popular today. The retro toys, we talked about nostalgia, so many people buying these types of toys during the pandemic and part of the reason why the companies couldn't stock the shelves fast enough.
So I wasn't necessarily surprised by what entered the Hall of Fame this year, but Bingo, Pound Puppies, and Nerf were three things that I thought maybe should have been included and, I think, will likely be included at some point in the future, especially Bingo when you talk about the total sales of that game over the last several decades and the relevance today, the popularity of Bingo playing out in so many locations today. So it certainly makes a lot of sense.
My favorite though was the American Girl Dolls, which was actually entered into the Hall of Fame last year, which I think makes a lot of sense. But I think it's hard to choose. There obviously are so many hit games out there. It's about time that top made it in. Maybe we'll see some of the ones that we personally like over the next couple of years.
RACHELLE AKUFFO: I mean, I did see that Nintendo's Gameboy had made it in there before as well, which makes sense, because a lot of the ways that they judged it, it wasn't just whether the toy was fun. It was things like confidence, like they talked about in "Masters of the Universe," if you used to watch "He-Man" cartoons as a kid like I did, what it did for your confidence, to feel strong, to feel empowered.
So they really take a holistic view when they look at some of these toys, which explains why American Girl Dolls made it in. You get to see yourself represented and with different kinds of hairstyles and clothing and culture. So I love the idea of this. And I'm a-- my daughter, she's only nine, but she's a big '80s kid. So she has a Lite-Brite. I try and make her play a lot of board games so I can live vicariously. And "Operation" is another really fantastic one.
SEANA SMITH: Ooh, "Operation." I played that. I never had a Lite-Brite as a kid, but I hear it's a lot of fun. And certainly, it's popular. It's even popular today. People are still buying them, like you and like for your daughter.
