Security, enterprise support and collaboration emerge as major themes during KubeCon NA

After three full days in Detroit, the KubeCon + CloudNativeCon NA gathering came to a close, marked by open-source project news and expanding enterprise use cases for Kubernetes.

Several key themes emerged during the week, with one that stood out in particular.

“The big story was security; the software supply chain was the number one consistent theme,” said John Furrier (pictured, right), industry analyst for theCUBE. “The growth of open source exposes potential vulnerabilities with security, so software supply chain gets my vote.”

Furrier spoke with theCUBE industry analysts Lisa Martin (pictured, left) and Savannah Peterson (pictured, center) at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon NA 2022, during an exclusive end-of-show analysis broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed key learnings from three days of KubeCon coverage. (* Disclosure below.)

Adjusting to the enterprise

TheCUBE analysts noted that the growing importance of open-source tools in running major enterprise systems was another key topic of discussion among KubeCon attendees during the week.

“The hallway track conversations are shifting towards adjusting to the enterprise,” Martin said. “We had Ford on the show, Mass Mutual, ING and Home Depot. We are seeing all of these big companies that we know and love become software companies right before our eyes.”

The open-source community’s collaborative nature set the tone for much of the interaction among participants at the show.

“I was impressed by the energy that everyone brought here and the desire to help,” Peterson said. “That culture of collaboration extends far beyond just the Cloud Native Computing Foundation projects. Everyone here is keen to help each other.”

CNCF plays a key role in fostering a spirit of collaboration while attracting new developers to the fold. It is a balancing act that continues to evolve as the number of open-source projects and contributors grows.

“This year is an inflection point in my opinion because you are seeing the developer ecosystem growing so fast,” Furrier said. “CNCF is at the center point, and they have to maintain the culture of developer experts and maintainers while balancing the newbies. It’s a hard job to balance all the stakeholders.”
