The Java part of GraalVM CE will be available to the OpenJDK community in the future, and the recently released version 22.3 includes JDK 19 builds, jlink support, new monitoring features, new Native Image APIs, and more.

GraalVm part of OpenJDK

Oracle announced at JavaOne conference that the GraalVM Community Edition Java code will be included in OpenJDK in the future in order to better align GraalVM technology development with that of Java. This change will apply to the CE parts of the Graal just-in-time (JIT) compiler and Native Image. Oracle plans to hand over GraalVM techniques that are currently under development. Previous versions, including the recently released GraalVM 22.3, are still available in the associated GitHub repository.

The GraalVM team will follow the same methodologies and approach as the OpenJDK community, including having Committer and Reviewer roles, as well as JEPs. They will also align their release models, which means that GraalVM will have Critical Patch Update releases every three months, feature releases every six months, and an LTS release every two years.

For the time being, Oracle will remain in control of the parts intended to process other programming languages. In addition to Java, the GraalVM can process Python, Ruby, JavaScript, and R.

Check Oracle’s official announcement for more information.

GraalVM v22.3

22.3 is the final feature release of 2022, and it will be supported with bug and vulnerability fixes for the next 12 months. If you've been considering upgrading your GraalVM version, now is the right time.

GraalVM Community can be downloaded from GitHub, and GraalVM Enterprise builds can be obtained from Oracle Technology Network. Check out the release notes for a complete list of changes.
