Recently, I started getting junk/spam emails in my inbox folder whereas previously the same emails went straight to the junk folder. Anyone else experiencing this.
What are your junk mail settings?

Did not change settings. Same as before this started happening .

I've been using gmail for almost 20 years, and in the last few months something has changed to how they filter mail - it used to be pretty perfect at zapping the spam, but now it's letting a lot of stuff through. Not sure if that's the OP's situation, but I've definitely noticed a change with gmail.

Yes, that’s what is happening. I’m using a hotmail account with Apple mail. Do not have any rules, just the default mail settings. Seems more prevalent on the MacBook Pro. Not as bad on my iPad.

Every once in a while you could log into the webmail interface (at https://outlook.live.com/owa/ ) and report the bad email. There's right-click choices to report junk, phishing or choose from a checklist of other possible problems.

'Hotmail' seems to filter very well to me. macOS mail has been more miss than hit on dealing with spam/phishing/malware. I don't want to call it useless, but it's close. Rules on macOS Mail is so inconsistent, and a farce. Sometimes they seem to work, and other times they don't. But Hotmail seems good. They did tweak their server install recently though. I found they moved the 'Send' button in composing messages. Just because they can...

I occasionally see this, but it's been a few months now. Seems like, on occasion, however Gmail filters spam and applies user rules doesn't run/trigger.

For the most part, Gmail has been and still is rock solid for spam filtering for me.

I've had times when I have been swamped by spam. I restart everything and eventually it works. I have most of the rules on an iMac, and leave it running 24/7. The weakest link in their mail system is there is no way to update all the rules across the account. Rules created on one system only work if that system is on and logged in making it just generally useless, especially if one machine with many rules on it is either off or replaced.

AND iCloud Mail doesn't have anything close to a 'robust rule system'. I can move selected messages to a folder, but it doesn't allow for auto deletion. I have had rules do unintended things like delete wanted emails, but removing the ability to whack messages is shortsighted I think, and not sharing rules is just dumb. Apple *could* handle spam/junk so much better, and empowering users to prune messages is part of that process.

Thanks for your reply. What is frustrating is the vast majority of spam is so obviously spam that it should be easy for a good email application to filter without setting up rules... underlying email addresses full of random letters and symbols, nothing in the body of the email, emails from Yeti or Ace Hardware.

I’m going to try and filter using not in my contacts.
