Tencent Holdings, the world’s largest video gaming company by revenue, has teamed up with Logitech to launch a handheld clouding game console called Logitech G Cloud, which could become a rival to Valve’s Steam Deck.
Logitech G Cloud will support cloud streaming from Xbox Cloud Gaming and NVIDIA’s GeForce Now. In addition, users will be able to stream local games from their Xbox consoles and Steam games via the SteamLink app, download remote play apps and allow video streaming via the Google Play Store.
The console, which has a 7-inch 1080p resolution touch screen and a refresh rate of 60Hz, is schedule to be released in October at a retail price of US$349.99, pre-order buyers may be able to get a discount for US$299.9. according to a Logitech’s press release. In comparison, Steam Deck is priced at US$399, US$529 and US$649, based on different console standards.
Cloud gaming, which get rid of the requirements to download or install PC or console games, has become an increasingly hot topic for game industry in recent years. However, it is not really easy for console developer to market the new form of gameplayers and generate profit from it. The typical example would be Google Stadia, which is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of cloud gaming, couldn’t manage to become a household name.
Logitech G will face competitions from Valve’s Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch, which have already built their names and brand images among players.
Consoles have only accounted for a small part of China’s overall video gaming market, as they were prohibited from sale until a 15-year government ban ended in 2015. Major console makers have since launched China-specific versions of their hardware, so it is unknown whether Tencent will release a specific version for Chinese consumers due to the game regulations in the domestic market.
