据多家媒体报道，当地时间9月20日，美国加利福尼亚州蒙特雷（Monterey）太平洋瓦电（PG&E）公司的一个变电站着火，火源是由变电站中特斯拉Megapack的巨型电池储能设备引发的。
据公司发言人表示，火灾是20日凌晨1时30分左右被发现。火灾发生后，附近居民被紧急撤离，大火还导致道路被封锁。
据蒙特雷当地的空气污染控制官员理查德·斯特德曼表示，一般来说，锂离子电池火灾会释放出盐酸和氢氟酸等有毒成分，虽然目前关于这场火灾是否会对空气质量产生影响尚无法确定，但将在火灾完全扑灭后与地方当局合作研究这个问题。
对于这场事故，特斯拉方面保持沉默，而马斯克也没有任何发言。
