Microsoft’s most recent Windows 11 preview build comes with a change that the company itself hasn’t announced: animated icons in the Settings app.
The change was discovered by Rafael Rivera and revealed on Twitter (via reddit), though, for the time being, the animated icons in Settings aren’t enabled – you can try them out, however, with Vivetool (ID is 34878152).
As you can see in the video in the embedded tweet, the Settings app indeed looks more modern, though it remains to be seen if the animated icons are indeed everybody’s cup of tea. On the other hand, they could make Settings feel slower, possibly causing performance problems on some devices.
What’s new in the latest Windows 11 preview build
The change is part of Windows 10 build 25188, which doesn’t come with too many changes but is mostly focused on bug fixes and further optimizations.
One of the most notable changes in this Windows 11 preview build is Windows Terminal becoming the default terminal app in the operating system.
“Windows Terminal is now the default terminal in Windows 11. This means, all command line applications will open in Windows Terminal automatically (Command Prompt and PowerShell, for example). The setting for this change can be found via Settings > Privacy & security > For developers. Please note that Windows Terminal version 1.15 or greater is required for this feature,” Microsoft explained.
Furthermore, Microsoft says it “updated the Wi-Fi and VPN properties pages in Settings to now include a link to advanced properties for that network.”
At this point, all these changes that Microsoft is testing don’t have a specific release date, and it’s not known if the animated icons in the Settings app are just an experiment or the software giant wants to bring them to all users at a later time.
