TIOBE Index for August 2022

Python Is Skyrocketing!

15. Aug 2022

Python remains the most popular language among developers! It topped the TIOBE index for the first time in October 2021 and shows no signs of slowing down!

Every month, the TIOBE Index measures the popularity of various programming languages and calculates their ratings using search engines such as Google, Bing, Yahoo!, Wikipedia, Amazon, YouTube, and Baidu. The rankings for August 2022 show little change but highlight Python’s dominance over the last few months.

Python has grown by 2% this month and now has an all-time high market share of 15.42%. The creators of the TIOBE index attribute this success to the fact that Python is currently used extensively in almost every area of programming. The only exception they recognise is (safety-critical) embedded systems, which they justify with the fact that Python is dynamically typed and too slow. According to the report, as a result, the more performant languages C and C++ are currently gaining popularity. This month, C is ranked second in the TIOBE Index, with Java coming in third and C++ fourth. The top four languages, Python, C, Java, and C++, now have a combined market share of more than 50%.

What makes Python so widely used in 2022?

Python was named "Programming Language of the Year'' by TIOBE Index in 2020 and 2021, a title given to the programming language with the greatest increase in ratings in a year. It continues its trajectory in 2022, and we can expect it to win the title again this year.

Python is an open-source, general-purpose language. It was created more than thirty years ago and has a strong and active language community that can support developers at all levels. Python’s simplified syntax makes it a great language for beginners and an excellent starting point for backend development, and experts enjoy its flexibility and an assortment of tools and libraries. The language is also widely regarded as one of the best programming languages for Cloud Computing, Machine Learning, and Big Data, which are currently some of the hottest trends in computer science.

The remainder of the Index - no significant changes

There were no major changes in the position of other languages in the Index. Apple’s programming language, Swift, has swapped places with PHP and is now number 11. It is too soon to tell if this is the beginning of a downward trend, and the language is still ranked higher than it was in 2021 when it was 16th. Rust has climbed up the ladder and is approaching the top 20, while Kotlin has returned to the top 30. Google’s Carbon, recently announced as a potential replacement for C++, has entered the TIOBE index at position 192, and it remains to be seen if its popularity will increase.
