Extracting data from Macbook SSD
So I have a dead Macbook air A1466 (the last time my daughter powered it on she said it powered on but the screen stayed blank and I cant fnd the power supply at the moment) and I want to get the data off the SSD. I have purchased an Apple SSD to NVME adaptor and connected it to my NVME to USB adaptor. I connected it to my new Macbook air M1 running OS 12.4 but it didnt recognise it all, so then I connected it to my Windows PC and it recognised a drive but then gave this error from HFS explorer when I manually selected the device ( it couldn't auto find it)
Invalid HFS type
HFSExplorer supports
HFS_PLUS
HFSX
HFS_WRAPPED_HFS_PLUS
HFS
Detected type is (UNKnOWN)
So then I read I could read it from my Mac if I booted into Recovery and then accessed it via Disk utility, but again it didnt even detect anything.
I dont remember if File Vault is enabled on the SSD I am trying to recover from.
I also tried Paragon Software's APFS for Windows but that said no supported volumes found
Does anyone have any experience with these Apple SSD to NVME adaptors?
Thanks
Is her MBA actually dead?
“screen stayed blank” could simply mean that the MBA hadn't restarted, the battery was run down, the power supply wasn't plugged in properly, the adapter has an issue, the charger, etc.
With the power supply connected, new or not, the MBA might well boot up and then you could attach an external USB drive and use Carbon Copy Cloner to back it all up.

If you know someone with a comparable generation Mac, isn't there a way of connecting them with a cable and going into Target Disk Mode? https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/transfer-files-mac-computers-target-disk-mode-mchlp1443/mac
Or, connecting them and using Migration Assistant to bring over files?
In any case, that's a non-techie response to the situation not an answer to your technical question. I'm sure others will offer ideas.
Or, as often happens, you will have solved this by the time you get the answer you needed!
