Samsung launches industry’s first 24Gbps GDDR6 memory

Samsung Electronics announced the start of trial shipments of the industry’s first Graphics Double Data Rate 6 (GDDR6) DRAM memory chips, providing speeds of 24 Gb/s. In addition, Samsung has also updated slower solutions, providing them with reduced power consumption.

The products are manufactured using HKMG (High-K Metal Gate) technology, which was first used in Samsung GDDR6 memory in 2018. As DRAM structures shrink, the insulation layer becomes thinner, resulting in more current leakage. Replacing the insulator with HKMG material reduces leakage and improves performance.

Samsung’s new GDDR6 chips deliver approximately 33% faster performance than the previous generation of 18Gb/s solutions.

The memory will be in use in the next generation of graphics accelerators, including portable computers, artificial intelligence and high-performance computing systems, game consoles, etc.

The announced chips production uses a 10 nanometer (1z) class deep ultraviolet (EUV) photolithography process. Samsung’s new GDDR6 chip family will also feature low-power options to help extend laptop battery life.

Using Dynamic Voltage Variation (DVS) technology, which adjusts the operating voltage based on performance requirements; Samsung will release 20 and 16 Gb/s chips that will achieve approximately 20% higher power efficiency at 1.1V; compared to industry standard 1.35 V.

According to analysts at IC Insights, demand for semiconductors in general and for memory chips in particular has begun to slow down. Major market players noted a decrease in demand for microchips in June compared to May. On average, the market demand for chips last month fell by 5%.

Although the IC Insights report is mainly focused on Taiwanese manufacturers, it also points to the US company Micron, which expects a decrease in demand for its products in the third quarter of this year. Micron sales will drop by 17% from July to September. But at the same time, demand for Micron products rose 11% in the second quarter compared to the first and 19% compared to the same period last year.
