I’m a UI Designer, and in my internship, I learned what UI designers actually do in a company that is much more work than I expected but with time every designer will get used to it, so let’s see.

Note: I’m only talking about what UI designers do in this article. All the things are listed as I experienced in my company. It may vary.

Junior vs Senior Designer

UI designers also have a hierarchy; the most common are the senior team of designers and the junior team of designers. Where junior teams who have less experience in the field of knowledge of the field have to follow the orders of their senior team of designers who have some experience in the design field, especially the UI design field.

In my company, I’m a junior designer and I have to follow the orders from my seniors so In this article I’ll share all the things I do as well as some of the things that they do.

My company is basically a client-based company means they take a project from the client and then build and deliver it from scratch. from designing to development all the things are performed in my company. so with that said let’s talk about my role and duties as a UI Designer.

1. Meeting Clients

Meeting with clients is basically the work of UX and Senior Designers but In my company, sometimes junior designers also join the meeting with clients and listen to the needs and requirements of the client to understand their point of view. We don’t talk much but listen and ask questions at last.

2. Working closely with UX Designers

UX designers are the people who perform user research, testing, and defining the features of the app, what to do and what to not do. We work really close with UX designers so that we can understand the needs of users also.

3. Designing Interfaces

This is the Main Job, our seniors first understand the things from the UX team, and then they divide all the things with us, junior designers. We then start performing the work we got, wireframing or designing signup, or designing, etc. By following the guidelines given by our senior on what color to use, shape, etc. basically our senior create a mini design system.

4. Prototyping and Sharing with Clients

When designing is done, we jump off to prototyping, and then we the work with the client with a link and ask them to see how things works and also to listen to their feedback.

5. Altering the Design

After listening to their feedback we start altering the design, as per the client’s requirement. after that, it’s time to share the handoff design to developers.

6. Handing-Off Design to Developers

In this process, we create the final version of Design system, finalize other things like components, design, etc. and then we export our design to the Zeplin tool developers in our company use mostly to hand off design.

As junior designers we don’t export the design to Zeplin but my seniors know about it so they do it, they are teaching us to use it but most of the export work is done by senior designers. read more

7. Working closely with Developers.

At our company, after the handoff, we also meet up with developers from time to time to see the progress of the project and to see that is it similar to what we expected or not, as junior designers we also talk to developers.
