The Newsroom
We go down the rabbit hole of news, so you don't have to.
Hello Product Hunt,
I’m Jenny, Co-Founder and CEO of The Newsroom. First things first: a massive thank you to @kevin for hunting us!
I’m thrilled to share with you the result of our work at The Newsroom over the past months, after pivots, user research, expert interviews, a handful of “how on earth do I do this”, and a healthy dose of “this is not what it should look like, is it?”. We’ve been building a new way to engage with the news through bite-sized news, historical context and diversity of thought, putting you in the driver’s seat to define how deep you want to dive.
Use The Newsroom to: - Get a snapshot of the news, literally three bullet points. This will allow you to be in the know in your next conversation with friends. - Go deeper, getting a more detailed (but still digestible) summary of current events. This will allow you to share that one bit of information your friends haven’t heard about yet. - Explore different points of view, understanding how different publishers are talking about the same topic: what do they agree and disagree on? This will help you understand nuance, not get outraged when in contact with people who think differently from you. This will help you have a healthy conversation with that friend with whom you don’t really talk about anything beyond food and holidays because you always end up quarrelling. - Understand the historical context behind the news. This will allow you to do two things: always have an answer to “how did we even get here?”, and sound quite smart when discussing current affairs.
As a news and debate lover, I’m very proud of the relentless focus we’ve had at The Newsroom to build something that breaks our bubbles and puts us in contact with points of view that are different from our own. After all, there’s no democracy without debate, and there’s no debate without diversity of opinions.
Now, please get a cup of coffee (or tea, I won’t judge) and enjoy your first Morning Brief.
I can’t wait to hear what you think about it.
Jenny
Hi everyone! My name is Pedro and alongside @jenny_romano , I’m the Co-founder and Head of Product at The Newsroom. I’m really excited to share our journey and product with you today! Growing up, some of my fondest memories revolve around dinner tables 🍽 – family and friends would come together, discuss, disagree, but at the end of the day we would listen to each other and engage in healthy debates. Nowadays I feel that conversations get too polarised too quickly, as each one of us falls deeper into our ideological bubbles. At The Newsroom we’d love to bring back those dinner table conversations – helping people move out of their bubbles, understand the wider perspectives behind a topic, and find common ground. So what have I been doing at The Newsroom specifically? As Head of Product, half of my work has been building buggy code, and the other half has been fixing those annoying bugs 🐞 – just kidding! For the past months the biggest part of my work has been talking to people: users, technologists, journalists, psychologists, etc. Trying to understand how we can build an experience that will help create healthier news reading habits. The experience we’ve designed aims at giving you control over how you read the news, so you can choose whether to get just the facts (if you're short on time), or deep dive into a topic by exploring different perspectives and the historical background behind an event. We’ll start by giving you a “Morning Brief” ☕️ of a few key news events a day, and over time are working on scaling our approach to be able to service more topics, and better personalise our experience using AI. If, like me, you’d love to understand the wider context behind the news and explore different perspectives that exist on an event, I invite you to try out The Newsroom App.
Our journey is still starting and we are eager to hear your thoughts! Reach out to us by submitting feedback through the App, or directly via email at [email protected].
