Now that the announcement has happened with price and specs, what's the move if any?
Yea I'm good with my 16gb/1TB refurbed M1.... I don't see the benefit of spending $1000 to upgrade simply to get 18% faster performance and a nicer color. I actually like the wedge design....

Let's see:
- 18% improvements (per Apple's graphs)
- 1W increase in power consumption @ idle
- Hotter chip due to M2 die size increase

Not enough of a performance boost to warrant an upgrade for me, I find the M2 is more of a point upgrade.

This 100%. The M1 is plenty fast for me. No need to upgrade to the M2. Plus, The wedge design of the M1 is just damn sexy IMHO. The new Air design is boring in comparison. And although the new Air may be a bit thinner, it just looks chunky. And it’s only like .1 lb lighter. So glad I picked up an Apple refurbed M1 16/512GB last Spring. Will be enjoying it for a long time to come! However, I’m thinking about selling my 11” 2020 iPad Pro 512GB to upgrade to the 2021 M1 iPad Pro. I really like the multitasking/multiple windows feature that will be coming to the M1 iPads.Yea I'm good with my 16gb/1TB refurbed M1.... ....You do realize the 2020 M1 Macbook Air at it's thickest point (.63 in) was actually thicker than the 2020 M1 Macbook Pro (and 2022 M2 MBP) right (.61 in)?The new air is barely thinner than the 2020 M1 / 2022 M2 Pro with Touch Bar in the iJustine video.
I dont like this
It only looked thinner because the front end was tapered. So the 2022 MBA is actually overall thinner than the MBP now, which was already a thin machine.
The pre-2020 13" Macbook Pro was already exceptionally thin too at (.59 in) and the 2022 Macbook Air is thinner than that too, (.44 in).
So maybe it looks deceiving on camera, but when you hold it, I'm sure you'll notice the difference. I definitely noticed the difference between the thickness on a pre-2020 Macbook Pro 13" and the 2020 one with the new butterfly mech keyboard that was thicker.

in practice it is thinner. I grab the laptop by the thin part of the wedged chassis not the thickest part-- who does that?....You do realize the 2020 M1 Macbook Air at it's thickest point (.63 in) was actually thicker than the 2020 M1 Macbook Pro (and 2022 M2 MBP) right (.61 in)?

Especially when the laptop lid is already open, theres nowhere else to reasonably wrap your fingers around but the thinest part. when grabbing from the side your hand normally levitates towards the thin end too because its out of the way of sandwiching the keyboard
also the wedge shape removes the rough edge you feel when you rest your wrists on it, on a desk.
I experience this with my 2016 nTB 13" MBP.

has Touch Bar - most see as a conWhich is why I have been recommending the 13" MBP all along.
doesnt have full height function keys
doesnt have magsafe
doesnt have Midnight color
doesnt have high impedance headphone jack
doesnt have 1080p camera
doesnt have dual USB-c charger
doesnt have 13.6"
2022 13.3" MBP is a bust imo unless you get a steep discount

Agreed. I don't see much reason to upgrade from an M1 MBA.Let's see:Yeah, seems like spending money on this from an M1 is not looking good.

- Midnight Color is new and something nice to have
- Magsafe, I'll give it to you
- 1080p camera, well you can use your iPhone as webcam now
- Dual USB charger, yea also nice to have, not a must have
- 13.6", it's just shy by 0.3"

its not that all of those are deal breakers, but the Air is $100 less AND you get all that stuff. its a no brainer and the value prop for the 2022 13" isnt there. Its not a bad device Im sure and again for a deep discount I think it would be a nice score but I dont understand shelling out $1300 for this when the $999 and $1199 M1 and M2 Airs exist.I fail to see how it's a bust and also how bad it is given that Apple openly stated it's their 2nd best selling laptop.

Each machine their own market segments. Just because it isn't for you, don't go an call it a bust. Also, for the base price of the MBA, the MBA is a nice computer to have. That said, add in extras and you'll be better served with the 13" MBP.its not that all of those are deal breakers, but the Air is $100 less AND you get all that stuff. its a no brainer and the value prop for the 2022 13" isnt there. i'd only do it to get the 16gb version...because in my great idiocy i opted for the 8gb model and im regretting it,even more so when i think of the future lol (but im not gonna do it still, happy with what i have ,its mostly fear that's clouding my judgement)
ok actually i went mba m1 16gb > mbp 14> mbp 16 >mba m1 8gb ,lol

with all due respect, I can and will call it a bust. it will be of no consequence, doing so. Many others have also pointed out it sits oddly in the lineup.
Anyways , this isnt a thread about the 13" Pro its about the Air from one gen to the next can we hop back on topic please

I am considering it, even though I don't really have to have it. By the way, the Midnight black color is not as dark as many here and elsewhere have imagined.

Others may point that out, but that's not what the sales from it say. In fact, being #2 seller means there is a target audience.its an inanimate object and one from a corporation.

As per the MBA M2, I'll keep saying it, if you pick the base model, you'll get a good deal. Anything more, you likely will be better served with something else given how fast prices climb and thermals.

I want the M2 Air, but I have no real needs that aren't being met by my M1 Air.
The only excuse I could come up with (and I love justifying new hardware) is that I could use a 512 GB SSD instead of the 256 GB SSD I spec'ed on mine.

Agreed on 16GB version. I'm trusting that my 8GB will get me through the OS updates over the next year or two when Apple officially drops support for the 2020 M1........i'd only do it to get the 16gb version...because in my great idiocy i opted for the 8gb model and im regretting it,even more so when i think of the future lol (but im not gonna do it still, happy with what i have ,its mostly fear that's clouding my judgement)

I feel like the new air is a decent upgrade. I like the magsafe, new colors and the (slightly) better screen. I don't care for the price increase though.
I'm definitely not planning to upgrade. The M1 real world performance isn't too far behind and I can't justify the extra cost. I feel decent about the future though at this rate and I'll probably wait to upgrade in several years. The M1 air continues to be a fantastic option.

Nope. Hanging on to my 1Tb 16Gb M1 MBA. Can't think of anything close to a legitimate reason to upgrade.
Now if Apple brought back those bright candy colors (like on the old iMacs), I would upgrade in a heartbeat. 🤣
