SpaceX employees post an internal open email criticizing CEO Elon Musk, then get fired

SpaceX employees posted an open letter to the company’s internal communication system asking leadership at the company to implement a number of measures, with the stated aim of ensuring that SpaceX’s actual “systems and culture” live up “to its stated values,” The Verge’s Loren Grush reports. The letter specifically calls out Elon Musk’s behavior on Twitter, and the manner in which he has used the platform to respond to allegations of sexual harassment levied against him by an accuser in May.

One day later, The New York Times broke news that SpaceX moved quickly to terminate at least some of the employees (Reuters later reported it was at least five) involved in the letter. SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell also circulated an email to the company outlining the logic behind the terminations and generally denouncing the letter, which took issue with Elon Musk’s Twitter use and its reflection on the company, among other things.

FAA releases final assessment of SpaceX’s Starbase and Starship program, requires changes

The Federal Aviation Administration on Monday published its highly anticipated environmental assessment of SpaceX’s Starbase launch site in Boca Chica, Texas, and the Starship launch program, with the agency finding that SpaceX’s plans would not result in significant impacts to the environment — but requiring the company to implement a number of mitigation measures before it can start conducting test flights.

Biggest rail strike in 30 years brings UK to standstill

STORY: Picket lines appeared at dawn and will be lined by some of the more than 40,000 rail workers who are due to strike on Tuesday, Thursday (June 23) and Saturday (June 25), bringing the network to a standstill. The London Underground was also shut due to the strike. In Tonbridge, in southeast England, the sun came up on a shuttered train station as members from the Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) picketed outside.Prime Minister Boris Johnson, under pressure to do more to help British households who face the toughest economic hit in decades, said the industrial action would harm businesses as they continue to recover from the pandemic.Unions have said the rail strikes could mark the start of a "summer of discontent" with teachers, medics, waste disposal workers and even barristers moving towards industrial action as surging food and fuel prices pushes inflation towards 10%.

Impossible Mining is combing the seafloor for battery metals

Impossible Mining CEO Oliver Gunasekara pulled me aside at last week’s TechCrunch Climate event with a fascinating pitch. Turns out there are a lot of valuable metals on the ocean floor — materials like nickel and cobalt, which are key to tackling the growing demand for lithium ion batteries. The deep-sea mining industry should not be granted leave to mirror the impacts of terrestrial mining.

EXPLAINER: What's next after Russia reduced gas to Europe?

It's fear that Russia's manipulation of natural gas supplies will lead to an economic and political crisis next winter. Russia last week reduced gas supplies to five European Union countries, including Germany, the 27-country bloc's biggest economy that heavily depends on Moscow's gas to generate electricity and power industry. Russian state-owned energy giant Gazprom has cut supplies through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline running under the Baltic Sea from Russia to Germany by 60% — Europe's major natural gas pipeline.

    S. Korea runs 1st successful homegrown space rocket launch

South Korea successfully launched its first homegrown space rocket on Tuesday, officials said, a triumph that boosted the country’s growing space ambitions but also proved it has key technologies to build a space-based surveillance system and bigger missiles amid animosities with rival North Korea. The three-stage Nuri rocket succeeded in releasing and placing its functioning “performance verification” satellite at a target altitude of 700 kilometers (435 miles) after its 4 p.m. liftoff from South Korea’s space launch center on a southern island, the Science Ministry said.
