Hope you’re doing good😎

Today, I feel very pleased to share with you all my first UX/UI case study😉

In this case study, I will take you through my entire process of designing interfaces for Gigz.

I feel very excited while starting this project and looking forward to learning new things along the way.

Design Process

Introduction

Gigz is an app for performing artists like singers, comedians, entertainers, and venues for better communication. It was a personal project that I did because I was interested in event management and have seen problems occurring due to miscommunication between both parties.

This project is likely to provide solutions for both artists and venue managers/owners for finding, communicating, understanding, and negotiating their terms and conditions.

Problem Statement✔

Venues have been inviting famous artists for big-budget events.

for mid and low-sized events and gatherings, they demand independent artists which are in their growth phase with decent audience size.

Independent Artists, on the other hand, pitch to various venues and organizers for gigs periodically by writing tons of emails and direct calling.

or, some get a contract with some agency that manages to get them gigs but charges a higher commission.

This gap between venues and artists is there in most the cities in India, however, this difference closes proportionally when musicians gain recognition and advance in their careers.

well, Independent artists are those musicians who are not signed to any record label or production company.

User Research📚

But, how big is the problem overall?

How important are Gigs/Live shows in an artist’s life?

Source: https://soundcharts.com/

Artists while pursuing their careers have to depend upon 3 major earning sources, Audio streaming revenue, Youtube ad revenue, and Gigs.
Gigs on average take up to 50% of artist's annual revenue
Gigs help growing artists to understand the audience, what they want, and how they’re responding to the kind of music in real-time, it’s a kind of live feedback.

Here’s what I found in Spotify India's artist data.

So, I divided them all into 4 groups based on their Spotify engagement

1*t13dJ7731T6tKi9wPJL1nA.jpeg

Group 1 artist gets interest from event management companies, and venue partners upfront for live shows, and also, have their contacts in space.
Group 2 artist pitches and manages to get decent gigs in cafes and sometimes opens for celebs for an even wider audience.
Group 3 artist pitches to venues directly and struggles to get even 3–4 shows in a month.
Group 4 artists are either not consistent or their genre is still un-explored among audiences.
So, I decided to go up with Group 3 Artists as my primary TG. Because of the fact that they struggle the most for gigs while pursuing their artist career.

I get on a 1:1 call with 2 venue managers, 1 staff member, and 3 Artists.
I asked them the following questions open-endedly and let them express whatever they feel about the issue.

Questions

As to my primary research, there’s no such platform that is providing this kind of service to the entertainers and venues. I’ve been in touch with such artist managers and artists who are in their growth phase and struggle to find the right venue partner or gigs overall to perform.

I talked to such artists as well as artist managers who manually pitch to the venue either by contact from a third person or directly by mail.

for mid and low-sized events and gatherings, they demand independent artists which are in their growth phase with decent audience size.

The cities in which the venues were being

  1. Delhi
  2. Hyderabad
  3. Indore
  4. Mumbai

Designing the solution🧠

Understanding the problem is the first step towards solution.

Redefining the problem once again,

As per my research findings,
1. Artists were required to find a venue with available respective time and location.
2. The solution could be an app that lets them find gigs available in their location nearby.
3. Some artists also look up quick gigs when they’re traveling for shoots or shows.

whereas, Venue managers
1. looking up someone to handle gigs, scheduling gigs, assigning artist slots, managing their travel and accommodation sometimes.
2. wants to look at artist’s work before they onboard.
3. wants to build good relationships with the artists for the future.

User Flow

Wireframing 🖌

Well, I sat with paper and pencil and did some rough sketching about the layout, keeping the problems and pain points in mind.

Here’s what I came up with.

Visual Design

I tried to make those screens on Figma with a number of iterations.

Conclusion and learnings🙂

This app could resolve the gap between artists and managers, keeping artists engaged and helping them build an online community presence.

As this was my first full-fledged design project, I got to use Figma inside out with all its small but important features and characteristics that a design should have.

What could have done more?

  1. The home screen could be designed better for artists, with interesting topics to learn about, the discovery of various events happing in the domain, also connecting with fellow artists would surely keep users engaged in the app.
  2. More data-driven research could be performed for analysis.
  3. Some navigation like the back button and some text actionable could be provided more room to be easily clickable.
  4. Whatsapp alert could be a good idea while remind artists about their upcoming gigs 1 hour or more prior.
  5. Testing the prototype with a variety of artists and venue managers.

Thank you for your valuable attention😊
