交通拥堵问题很多时候是车距控制问题，影响因素主要有人的反应时间、操作技术、驾驶习惯和车的加速效率等。这些因素的叠加，导致前后车间距不一，尤其是从停到起时，逼迫后方来车减速以免撞上前车。以此类推，会形成长长一条拥堵车队，同时还会有车从旁边车道见缝插针穿插进前后车距较大的两车之间，进一步加剧拥堵。车联网（V2X）要解决的问题之一就是车距，当智能汽车覆盖率高时，理论上可以一定程度缓解拥堵问题。
