TelSoc post-pandemic telecommunications event on 21 June

By David M Williams

TelSoc, the telecommunications society, is holding a free post-pandemic telecommunications event at 12:30 pm AEST, Tuesday 21 June. The event is online only and you can find more information and register here.

Please join TelSoc and IEEE ComSoc to hear from Hugh Bradlow on this important and forward-looking topic.

If the COVID-19 pandemic occurred in 2002 instead of SARS we would have had a much different experience than we did. Fewer than 16% of Australian households had broadband, compared to 91% today, and video-conferencing solutions were expensive and unfriendly.

Fortunately, in 2020 these solutions were available and affordable and telecommunications is now an essential part of daily life, and businesses cannot operate without it.

However, the availability of telecommunications is not uniformly spread across the country with 30% of the population living outside capital cities and often facing major challenges with such services.

In this free event Hugh will discuss some of these challenges and also the technology solutions required to go into addressing them - for example, will Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellations solve these issues?

Additionally, is the ACMA doing enough to combat spam and scam calls and texts? This will also be discussed.

Registration is free via Eventbrite. The event will be held via Zoom, with Zoom joining instructions sent to registered attendees just prior to the event.

TelSoc warmly welcomes new members so please consider joining and paying a modest annual fee to assist TelSoc's agenda of fostering Telecommunications and the Digital Economy.
