iTWireTV Interview: Sniip CEO Damien Vasta explains how eftpos and LCR help snip costs superbly

By Alex Zaharov-Reutt

GUEST INTERVIEW: Getting the Sniip is a great new way to cut costs and save money, with the app enabling a much better way to pay bills, including no fees at all when using debit cards, making the Sniip app impressively rewarding.

Sniip. This innovative Australian app is in used by over 70,000 Australians who have found its the best way to bill pay using BPAY, but connected to digital wallets, credit cards, and debit cards.

When using debit cards and Least Cost Routing (LCR), there are no fees when paying bills at all, and with a range of impressive features that let you take back control of bill payments, it's no surprise to see Sniip being snapped up by those who wish to become savvy money savers.

Sniip lets you easily keep track of your bill payments and receipts, schedule a payment, set-up an installment plan or create recurring payments. You can even have your emailed bills delivered automatically to the Sniip app and receive a push notification when it’s ready for payment, ensuring you'll never miss a bill again.

As the company notes, whether it’s your tax bill, school fees, rent, rego, membership renewal, phone bill, health insurance, car insurance, general insurance, body corporate, rates, water, utilities (or whatever bill you’ve got to pay) - if it’s one of the more than 60,000 Australian bills with a BPAY Biller Code on it, you can pay it with Sniip.

The eftpos network is part of making the savings happen for Sniip and its customers. Previously, the company was paying through international payment schemes fees of around $1.50 to process the average debit payment of $400, but with the eftpos Least Cost Routing network, this fee drops to a much lower 24 cents for the same transaction!

Sniip is also working with a great range of fintech innovators and disruptors that are based in Brisbane, and with Sniip also part of the Fintech Advisory Committee in collaboration with Fintech Australia, the savings have reached into the six figures.

Sniip co-founder and CEO Damien Vista noted that the Least Cost Routing network meant those savings are being reinvested into enhanced customer service, and stated: "From the customer perspective, it’s a win-win. They are able to use their debit card to pay bills without incurring any surcharge and enjoy a seamless customer experience that takes the pain out of paying bills.

“They simply load up their debit card into the app, then choose ‘debit’ when prompted to pay a BPAY bill.”

So, for plenty more detail, please watch the video interview with Damien below, after which you'll find a summary of the topics we spoke about, so please watch, and read on!

  • I started by introducing Damien, and asking him to tell us about Sniip, and how it has grown since its founding nearly a decade ago to become vastly more than just a blip in the Australian payments space.
  • We then spoke about Least Cost Routing and the types of savings Sniip has seen since actively embracing LCR.
  • I then asked Damien about his involvement in the eftpos FinTech Advisory Committee, working on digital IDs, eCommerce, eQR codes and more, and what this has meant for transparency in the fintech industry, payments companies, banks and greater access to finance networks.
  • When then spoke about the RBA ruling in October last year that merchants should be able to access eftpos and least-cost routing by the end of 2022, how Sniip is clearly an early adopter and what else Damien can tell us about the benefits he has been able to reap for Sniip, Sniip's customers and Sniip's partners.
  • Damien then told us about Brisbane having become a Fintech Hub, bringing a bit of Silicon Valley to Fortitude Valley, as it were, and why he thinks Brisbane has attracted fintech companies, and what the network is like.
  • I asked Damien to share how he entered into the payments space, and a bit about his history in the world of tech.
  • Damien then shared how he saw the future unfolding, great advice he had receiving in life, and his final message to iTWire viewers and readers, and Sniip's current and future customers and partners.
