Samsung is planning to build a new production line in South Korea to make larger OLED displays suitable for tablets and notebooks, with the company ultimately aiming to fulfill orders for future Apple products, according to The Elec. The Elec previously reported that Apple plans to release its first iPad Pro models with OLED displays in 2024 and said that Samsung would produce displays for those models at one of its existing lines. Samsung's future production line would be located at a different factory and be capable of creating OLED displays large enough for notebooks, paving the way for a MacBook Pro with an OLED display, which is rumored to launch in 2025 or later.

Apple has been transitioning its iPad and MacBook lines to mini-LED displays over the last year, and OLED would be the next step after that. Unlike mini-LED displays, OLED panels use self-emitting pixels and do not require backlighting, which could improve contrast ratio and contribute to longer battery life on future iPad and MacBook models. Apple already uses OLED displays for its latest iPhones and all Apple Watch models.

In the meantime, Apple is rumored to be planning more devices with mini-LED displays, including a new 27-inch monitor that could essentially be a Studio Display Pro.

I actually like the current miniLED displays on 14/16 MBP’s so yeah maybe only the iPad Air and MBA as you say.

So many display rumors lately that make absolutely no sense. How is Apple gonna spin this one? "Those miniLED panels we spent the last 4 years extolling the virtues of? Trash! Get our new, dimmer OLED displays, now with a shorter lifespan!"

If its regular OLED, then no, I would refuse to buy it.

If it is QD-OLED, then I think thats a good choice.
And the good news is, Samsung is the company behind QD-OLED.....so there is hope Apple is going with the better technology.

This is a good move. As long it's not in China. Samsung needs to add the iPhone line up too. That's more of a bigger investment.

What do you mean with regular OLED? W-RGB or Pentile OLED?

In case you’re wondering, current pentile OLEDs in smartphones have already outperformed QD-OLED before QD-oled even existed.

It’s unknown whether micro-LED will ever be viable. Certainly not in the next five years, probably (my guess) not within this decade, and maybe never. Apple would be stupid to not take up OLED if they can (economics and manufacturing capacity).

Great news, IMO, as Samsung make the best OLED panels out there.

Its been a few months since I last watched videos on the technology and how it was comparing. Alienware has the first commercial monitor based on it and has a no burn-in guarantee.

Basically, one of the traditional ways of doing OLED was a white OLED panel that goes through a color filter. This filter loses brightness, so they add a 4th pixel of white to add luminosity.

QD-OLED uses a blue OLED panel with quantum dots in front that absorb and re-emit photons in red and green. The blue that comes through is the original blue from the back panel. Its brighter than using a color filter, which means the actual OLED panel isn't driven as hard, which means you aren't pushing into burn-in territory (theoretically)...and you don't need a 4th pixel. They also use 3 layers of Blue OLED to get the full brightness, again, reducing the wear and tear that turns into burn-in.

This is a pretty long comparison of multiple display technologies, QD-OLED starts about a third of the way down.

Not really, finding other business partners when you have leading technologies in your pocket is a no-brainer.

Samsung would be still doing great without Apple, they don’t only manufacture computer and gadget parts. They do their own gadgets which sells very well, they are even into military hardware, and much more, and they do real research.

While Apple has nothing without Samsung and TSMC, except their OS. But hey, they know how to puzzle achievements of others, that’s also some kind of a competence for a quickie.

They aren’t investing their billions to secure Apples future and still reaping the fruits that were sow by Woz and Jobs. Let’s see how long the bubble will last. The products introduced in Tim‘s area were all a failure compared to pre-Tim products.

But yeah, when you see a company trying to protect „round corners“ instead of a great technology, it’s easy to see where their competence is.

Literally every report from every angle for the last year has said that Apple is moving to OLED for the iPad Pro as fast as they can.

There is no reason for them to stick with something that is lower quality and less appealing when OLED is finally ready for this application.

This. Exactly this.

QD-OLED seems to be better with eyes health, because Samsung claims it’s flicker-free. Also, less color soft and better viewing angles etc.

However, if it comes with the same OLED technology as they use on their smartphones, then I would buy the last LCD-LED iPad Pro or MacBook, and stay there for the next decade.

My eyes got severely sore and bloody-red when I was using the 13 mini I bought, and thankfully I was able to return it.

And what would Samsung and TSMC be without ASML? ASML manufactures the DUV/EUV lithography machines that enable TSMC and Samsung to produce such high-density chips. Without those machines, they wouldn't be the chip leaders they are. And what would ASML be without...etc...etc... It goes on and on.

So the point isn't whether a company needs to purchase tech from another company. They all do. It's the most efficient way to do things, since no one can specialize in everything. Or do you think Toyota should be mining its own iron? What matters is whether a company is *merely* a repackager, or is adding its own tech or innovation to the process. Apple is doing the latter, including with its M-series chip design.
