How to Grow on Instagram as a Designer (A Brief Guide)

10 Steps a Designer can follow to become big on Instagram.

I have collaborated with @uiblogger to give me more information about growing on Instagram for this article. uiblogger has grown from 0 to 12k in 6–7 months by reposting the designs from other designers.

This might be the best way to learn how to grow as a designer because, if I have collaborated with a designer, he might know a little about which design or post-work, but if you ask pages on UI design, they have data on what works for them.

As uiblogger have posted 500+ posts they have more experience on what works on Instagram as compared to what a designer with only 100 posts knows.

Or to just say simply I have no options but to pick uiblogger as the piece of reference for this article as I don’t have many friends with a big following.

A Post that uiblogger shared on crossing 10k followers

In this article, I’ll be sharing the 10 points with facts and proof that that thing works. These points are given by uiblogger itself and I’ve listed them so believe them they will work. Without any further delay let’s start it.

Why Instagram?

As a designer, you might ask, Why i should work hard to grow on Instagram? well to simply answer is that it’s the platform with the most active designers.. for example, dribbble doesn’t have as many active designers as Instagram has as it is primarily a Social media platform people come to chat with other friends or look at the latest memes.

Instagram is best if you want an active community of designers as they are already on this platform and love to find inspiration. Another best reason is that Instagram has an application, unlike dribbble.

There are also other great reasons to be on Instagram, help me by sharing your comment down your favorite point on being on Instagram.

10 Steps to Grow on Instagram (With Proof)

Let’s look at the 10 steps that a new designer can follow to grow big fast, and to learn more about that let’s look at the points shared by uiblogger that he learned from his experience of growing a 12k+ following..

#1 Create a Business/Creator Account

Switch to a Professional Account

The first step every designer must have to do is to switch to a professional account either a business or a creator account. which is best for you as it unlocks some key features that a normal account lacks like viewing stats, buttons on profile, tags on profile, etc.

#2 Post One Design Daily

Uploading daily makes you consistent with the platform and just by doing it the Instagram algorithm boosts your account as Instagram wants people to post more and more work and you’re doing it so Instagram will share your work with others so that they see and like the post so that you’ll motivate and be consistent, it’s like a cycle of consistency.

#3 Make Sure Design Look Attractive

The sad reality is that Instagram is a social media platform, the design that looks good does better no matter how usable it is, so try designing beautiful work as well as useful because you’re not only on Instagram to gain followers but also to learn and practice.

#4 Use Hashtags that Other Designer uses

By using the hashtags you’re telling the algorithm where to show your work and where your audience is. You can use #30 hashtags and to use them better divide them into 3–4 sections by their range of posts and popularity, for example, 10 with high, 10 with medium, and 10 with low popularity.

You can try new hashtags or use previous ones in rotation, try building several versions of hashtags according to the popularity, as mentioned above.

#5 Create Carousel Posts

The carousel post works out the best in terms of the post-interaction as shown in the above stats page from the uiblogger page. As in the carousel post the designer most of the time teaches something and lists some plugins, and resources, that help more than watching the beautiful interface.

#6 Comment On Others Posts

Commenting on others’ posts makes them feel great, and most of the time the designer will react to the comment and if they like your profile they will follow you.

the purpose of commenting is to be engaging and try to engage with other designers on stories, and posts by commenting, messaging them, etc.

#7 Be Engaging with Big Pages

Try to share your design with them, try to share your response to their stories, try to comment, etc. by doing these small things you will become a good follower on the page, and the admin will start recognizing you and eventually visit your profile and if he loves any of your work he will share your design on the page for free as you’re an active follower on the page, uiblogger does it most of the time and I believe every page have done it.

#8 Focus on Quantity more than Perfection

Perfecting your one post is not worth it, as on Instagram it is more of a quantity game, of course, the quality matters but more than that how much time you put on the platform matters, how many posts you’ve uploaded matters, as there are lots of good designers on Instagram it is a kind of tough to top them.

#9 Make Reels=

The new feature by Instagram can help new designers grow their following much more than before as nowadays the designers who are putting useful reels are growing faster than those who are just posting simple designs, try to copy and steal the work of other reelers on Instagram and share it on your profile.

I suggest you blend all the types of posts like a normal post, carousel posts, and reels within your account which eventually helps in getting all the audience views from various places.

#10 Take Care of Small Things

At last, let’s talk about some of the small or little things that new designers must do to give their account the final touch..

  • try adding UI/UX or design in your username or profile bio
  • Make your profile bio look neat and clean.
  • try to experiment with stuff, and watch what others are doing.
  • Connect with other designers and learn from them.
  • build your community.
  • take it as a long-term game.

by doing so, and something more that you might learn yourself by traveling through the road of becoming a big designer, you’ll build a big following and get requests from various clients, companies, etc. the road is open you just have to start walking and you’ll be at your destination one day..

at last, I have a bonus point for those who’ve read this article till the end.

Bonus: Don’t Try to Fool Instagram

Don’t try to gain fake followers, there will be people coming to you that will ask for money in exchange for giving you fake bot followers, you’ll feel good when you see the followers growing but Instagram isn’t fooling if you get caught your account will be banned. Waste of money and effort.

#BeOrganic, Gain followers on your own by your skills of design, just see as there are people who are just like you they wanted to learn from you and you just have to teach them, be their mentor and provide them a way to learn.

Teach what you know and learn what others know.. and eventually, you’ll be the Cristiano Ronaldo of UI/UX designers..

Thanks for reading.
