Microsoft has issued a new advisory to warn that Windows Server version 20H2 is approaching its end of life.

In other words, once the deadline is reached, Windows Server version 20H2 would no longer get any further update, so the security flaws that could impact the operating system would just remain unfixed.

The end of life is projected to happen on August 9. In other words, the August 2022 Patch Tuesday will bring the latest updates to this version of Windows Server, with the platform to then be considered retired and no longer getting any other improvements.

“Windows Server, version 20H2 will reach the end of servicing on August 9, 2022. This will also be the retirement of Windows Server Semi-Annual Channel (SAC). There will be no future SAC releases of Windows Server, and this product will no longer receive security updates after August 9, 2022,” Microsoft says.

“Windows Server is moving to the Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) as the primary release channel. Customers using Windows Server SAC should move to Azure Stack HCI. Alternatively, customers may use the Long-Term Servicing Channel of Windows Server.”

The end of Internet Explorer also on the radar

Microsoft is also planning for another high-profile demise, this time targeting Internet Explorer. The browser will be retired on June 15, at which point everybody is required to move to the IE mode that is bundled with Microsoft Edge.

“Starting June 15, 2022, the Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) desktop application will go out of support on Windows 10 Semi-Annual Channels and Windows 10 IoT Semi-Annual Channels. Customers are encouraged to move to Microsoft Edge, which provides support for legacy and modern websites and apps. For organizations with a dependency on legacy Internet Explorer-based sites and apps, sites will need to be configured to open in Microsoft Edge using Internet Explorer (IE) mode,” Microsoft says.
