The switch could take place on the iPhone 15

One of the most recent rumors on the iPhone front indicates that Apple is once again pondering the switch from Lightning to USB-C.

And while such speculation is nothing new, as similar reports have been making the headlines on several occasions before, it looks like the whole thing is indeed happening right now.

A report from Bloomberg indicates that Apple is indeed considering giving up on the proprietary port on the iPhone, and the switch could take place as soon as 2023.

In other words, the iPhone 15 could be the one to pioneer USB-C on Apple’s flagship device, though it goes without saying the plan could change overnight by the time this happens.

One of the reasons Apple is finally thinking of bringing USB-C to the iPhone is the push for legislation on this front in Europe. The EU wants to make the USB-C connector mandatory on devices sold on the continent, so in theory, Apple would have two options to continue selling the iPhone in this market.

Happening on the iPhone 15

The company can either launch a special iPhone with USB-C aimed at the European markets or give up on the Lightning port completely and therefore embrace the new connector entirely. Of course, the latter makes more sense, and Apple seems to know this as well.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also said recently that the iPhone 15 could come with USB-C.

“My latest survey indicates that 2H23 new iPhone will abandon Lightning port and switch to USB-C port. USB-C could improve iPhone's transfer and charging speed in hardware designs, but the final spec details still depend on iOS support,” he said. “It's expected to see existing USB-C-related suppliers of Apple's ecosystem (e.g., IC controller, connector) become the market's focus in the next 1-2 years, thanks to vast orders from iPhones and accessories' adoption of USB-C ports.”
