Use the following if you want more details in dark scenes (i think this are the default settings)

And that's mean that tone mapping is on by default as I thought.
All these options are for mpv.conf in the settings?

Youtube app doesn't do tone mapping but you can manually set quality to SDR in the smartube app.
With files (or netflix), if it's too dark, you can set the color scheme to "standard" but the image would be low saturated or use built-in brightness&contrast settings in mpv (+10 both is good).
Tone mapping is an app feature not global, so until Netflix does something you can't do much. Only fake the hardware id/specs that it can't support HDR (idk if it's possible).

Yeah sadly, It's a really-really great device for this price, barring this issue and Missing L1 issue. For now I downgrade my netflix subs to the regular 1080p one, which doesn't have HDR enabled, which sucks for TV, but i use netflix more the pad more often, so this way things are more viewable.

mine is fully working with L1. if you unblock bootloader it doesn't matter L1 or not, it will lose it's function.

I've been following this thread for a while. I managed to get hdr working by using the pre-installed 'mi video' app that came installed with miui 12.5 out of the box. The drawback is that it only works using that app and certain file formats. I suspect it's a licensing issue 3rd party developers have to pay a royalty to use the dolby vision software.

edit:scratch that, it did seem to be an improvement initially but it's still bad. I suspect a firmware update will be required.

sorry for the miswording, what I meant was L1 downgrade Issue, (fixable by a restart), L1 works fine when it do works.

Hi everyone, just got mi pad 5 in India few days back with Android 11 and MIUI 13 installed on same. I'm also facing same issue as on netflix dark scenes are very much darker and barely to see such dark movies. Also on youtube 2160pHDR dark scenes slightly darker. I've watched same Netflix episode by downloading and playing locally. There is darkness but better than Netflix app. Can anyone please suggest what to do? I've spent my 23k and very much disappointed with this issue. Please help me here.

Just some more info on mpv with hdr (all for normal hdr, no DV):
Use this if you want to use the hardware decoding that normal player use (like the integrated video player):
vo=mediacodec_embed
hwdec=mediacodec
wid=(intptr_t)(*android.view.Surface)
this will directly use HW decoding and present the result on the screen.

Use the following if you want more details in dark scenes (i think this are the default settings):
hwdec=mediacodec-copy
gpu-context=android
I don't know exactly what mpv uses internally here but the main idea is to use the HW decoding, copy the image back to memory, do some post processing and present it on the screen

What i like to use:
hwdec=mediacodec-copy
gpu-context=android
hdr-compute-peak=yes
tone-mapping=hable
Mostly the same, but not as aggressive in my opinion (only personal preference).

more to read: https://mpv.io/manual/stable/#options-tone-mapping

How do you use it ?
